On Friday, Feb. 18, nine Grizzly wrestlers traveled to East Bakersfield High School to participate in the Yosemite Divisional tournament.

The nine wrestlers were Saul Samano, Phillip Cortez, Martin Ayala, James Capps, Jairo Madrigal, Mario Madrigal, Raul Mata, Tyler Jones, and Ruben Corona. Out of the nine wrestlers only two were able to place in their thirty-two man bracket.

Ayala, at 140 pounds, and Mata, at 171 pounds, were each able to take eighth in their weight class and have qualified as alternates for this upcoming weekend’s tournament.

Ayala and Mata both had two wins and one loss in the first day of the tournament. As for the second day each had one win and two losses, making their record at the tournament 3-3.

In Ayala’s seventh place match, he wrestled against Independence’s Jawayn Farmbrogh and was head to head with him the entire three rounds. However, Farmbrogh seemed to have the upper hand a bit and ended up winning with the score at 4-3 when the buzzer went off.

Mata’s seventh place match was against Madera South’s Juan Valladores. Both wrestlers seemed to be on their toes the entire match, however, Valladores was able to get an escape point and a takedown on Mata and ended up winning with the points obtained from these two moves with the score at 3-0.

Out of the other local high schools, Monache High School has one wrestler who qualified for the next round and Porterville High School has five.

Monache’s wrestler Seth Hood, at 112 pounds, took seventh in his weight class.

The five wrestlers from Porterville are Mason Pengilly, Martin Sandoval, Shane Yacuta, Joseph Duran, and David Ali.

Pengilly (103 pounds), Yacuta (135), and Ali (215) were all able to take first in their weight class and earned Diviosional titles for themselves and their high school.

Sandoval was able to take fifth in the 119 pounds weight class and Duran was able to finish sixth in the 140 pounds weight class.

All eight of these athletes will be wrestling in the Central Section Grand Masters Valley Championship, which will be held at Buchanan High School on Saturday, February 26.
