The Granite Hills High School Varsity wrestling made history last night, February 3. The Grizzlies hosted the tri meet against their town rivals, the Monache Marauders and Porterville Panthers.

The Grizzlies were not able to get the win against the Panthers but were able to dominate the Marauders. Out of the eleven years of Granite’s history, the Grizzlies had never won the Marauders, until last night.

The night began with the Grizzlies going against the Marauders.

The matches started at the weight class of 135 pounds. Grizzly Phillip Cortez fought a hard battle, taking his opponent to the third round. Both men seemed gassed out but Cortez fought to stay in the lead and win with a score of 4-3.

Next up was Martin Ayala at the weight 140 pounds. Ayala worked his opponent and stayed in the lead the whole match. Ayala saw that his opponent was fighting for breath and finally decided to pin him with a cross-face cradle.

At 145 pounds, James Capps won in overtime after fighting a long three rounds. Capps and his opponent fought till the time ran out, ending the final round 15-15, which caused them to go into overtime. Capps did not let this get to him and got a takedown in the first one minute overtime to win the match 17-15.

Granite’s 152, 160, and 189 pounders each won their match by major decision. Jairo Madrigal (152 lbs.) worked his opponent throughout all three periods. Madrigal took down his opponent and rode him out in pretty much every period to win with a final score of 10-2. Mario Madrigal (160) also kept his opponent under his wing. Madrigal rode out his opponent and did not let him get much, if anything, on him, and won with a final score of 12-4. Tyler Jones (189) out conditioned his opponent by taking him to the third round, where it looked like his opponent was just trying to catch his breath the whole period. Jones dominated his opponent and ended with the score at 9-2.

Raul Mata (171) did not show any mercy to his opponent. Mata got to work quick and pinned his opponent in the first minute of the first period with a head-and-arm.

The next win for the Grizzlies was won by Jose Gonzalez at the weight 119 pounds. Gonzalez, a freshman, showed everything he had against his Marauder foe and won with the score 10-6.

The final win was obtained by Basilio Arroyo at the weight of 125 pounds. Arroyo worked hard through each period and showed his opponent who was the better wrestler. Arroyo won 4-2.

The final score was Monache 21 - Granite 35. This was a major upset for Monache and a huge victory for Granite.

The Grizzlies then faced the Panthers, who are the defending EYL champs for three years in a row now.

Out of the twelve varsity wrestlers of Granite, only four were able to get a win.

The first win was attained by Raul Mata (171). Mata and his opponent seemed pretty even throughout each period. However, when Raul was down 2-1 in the third period, he got an escape and then went in straight for a takedown to put the score at 4-2. Mata went through the third period with only allowing his opponent to get one more point making the final score 4-3.

Tyler Jones (189) was the show of the night. Jones took his opponent to the third round and fought hard for each and every point. Although Jones was already in the lead, he decided to work with his strength and pinned his opponent with thirteen seconds left of the match.

Phillip Cortez (135) again won his match by decision. He fought hard with his opponent and went into the final round with the score 4-7, Cortez in the lead. Cortez knew he could not let his opponent win, however, the Panther shot in and took Phillip down making the score 6-7. The clock ran out and with the score at what it was, collected the win for Cortez and the Grizzlies.

The final win for the Grizzlies was acquired by their 140 pounder Martin Ayala. Ayala showed his opponent who was the dominant man throughout the first period. Going into the second round, Ayala was in the lead and capitalized on his situation. Ayala ran a cross-face cradle on his opponent, pinning him in the first 39 seconds of the second round.

The final score was Granite 18 - Porterville 58.

Although the Grizzlies did not obtain both wins against their rivals, they were content with the fact that they made history. The Grizzlies are now ready to practice hard and get ready for league finals which will take place on Saturday February 12, 2011.
