On Thursday, Jan. 27, the Granite Hills Grizzlies wrestlers travelled to Delano to face off against the Delano Tigers and the Tulare Western Mustangs.

The Grizzlies were successful over the Mustangs, but fell short against the Tigers.

The matches began with Granite versus Western at the weight class of 103 pounds. Western took the lead as a team from the start by getting a forfeit at103’s, since Granite had no wrestler at this weight.

Granite wrestlers from the weight classes of 112, 119, and 125 pounds each got a win against their opponent from Western to put Granite in the lead with the score at 18-6.

Armando (112 lbs) won by way if forfeit. Saul Samano (119) won by pinning his opponent in the first minute of his match. Jose Gonzalez (125) also pinned is opponent after throwing him around on the mat for a few rounds.

At 140 pounds, Martin Ayala got busy working his opponent in the first period and pinned him within the first sixty-six seconds. This made the team score 30-24, after Granite gave up another two forfeits in the 130 and 135 weight classes.

James Capps (145) also got a pin to help add on points to the team score and lead to the Grizzlies’ victory.

Granite’s 171 pounder, Raul Mata, got straight to business against his Mustang opponent and ended up pinning him with a cross-face cradle within the first 45 seconds of the match.

Grizzly wrestler Tyler Jones, in the 189 pounds weight class, wrestled all three rounds with his opponent. Jones was in control the whole match and never let his opponent take the lead. Jones won by major decision with the score of 7-1. The final match against the Mustangs was crucial. With the score 39-42, the Grizzlies were down by three points. However, Granite’s Heavyweight, Micky Huber, pinned his opponent quick in the first period of his match to add on the six points needed to the team score.

The final score against the Mustangs was 45-42.

Although the Grizzlies were not victorious over the Tigers, there were many good matches won by the Grizzlies. Ayala (140) was down by points in his match when they hit the second round. He knew he had to get busy working his opponent and that is exactly what he did. After a minute or so Ayala pinned his opponent in a cross-face cradle. Another win was collected by James Capps (145) who pinned his opponent late in the second period by using a head-and-arm combination.

The final two wins against Delano were from Mata and Jones. Mata (171) worked his opponent to fatigue up to the final period. In the final period Mata saw that his opponent had become slow and tired and this made Mata get busy. Raul pinned his opponent early in the third period. Jones fought another match off like usual. He took his opponent to the final round because he knew his condition would beat his opponents. Jones won by major decision once again with the score 8-2.

The final score against the Tigers was 46-21.

The Grizzlies were not so down about their performance. They saw some things that they need to work on and plan to capitalize on them for next week. Next week they will be wrestling against their cross-town rivals Monache and Porterville at their home. The Grizzlies hope to show their rivals what they have going on for them this year on the mat.
