The Wrestling Begins

By Jairo MadrigalThe Granite Hills Grizzlies wrestling team hosted their first tri-meet match on Wednesday, Jan. 12, against the Cesar Chavez Titans and Mission Oak Hawks.
The Grizzlies wrestling squad was victorious against the Titans, with a team score of 48-12, but were not able to get the next win versus the Hawks, losing to them with a team score of 48-15.
Against Chavez, the Grizzlies were able to regulate their opponents to get a win. Chavez came unprepared to take on the Grizzlies without a full line up.
The highlights of this duel were Roberto Hernandez’s, 130 pounder, win by decision against his opponent and Raul Mata’s, 215 pounder, win by pin.
Mata is really Granite’s 171 pounder, but the team was missing a wrestler in this weight class so Coach Kouyoumtjian decided to bump Raul up to make the team have a better line up.
After getting their win against Chavez, the Grizzlies seemed psyched for their next dual against Mission Oak. However, the Grizzlies did not know what the Hawks had in store for them.
The Grizzlies started the night by forfeiting at the lightest weight class, which is 103 pounds, giving the Hawks the lead right off the bat.
Only three Grizzly wrestlers were able to come up with a win against their opponent from Mission Oak.
Saul Samano, Granite’s 112 pounder, won his opponent via decision. Samano, a freshman, has been looking very strong lately in his matches and has impressed quite an amount of people.
The next two win were from two junior veterans, Tyler Jones at the weight of 189 pounds and Raul Mata at 215 pounds. Jones was pumped and ready for his match since the get-go. Although he was not able to pin his opponent, he won via decision by going all three rounds and staying in control and in the lead. Mata’s win was already guaranteed. He knew his foe would have around a 40 pound weight difference, so he carefully snapped down his opponent and used the weight against him. Once Mata took him town he ran a cross-face cradle to pin his opponent and win the match.
The match who had everyone on their toes, however, was the heavyweight’s match. Granite’s Michael Huber had gone all three rounds against his opponent and ended up tied with the score 2-2. This made the wrestlers go overtime for a minute round and first to score wins. Nobody scored and the wrestlers then had to go into double overtime. They each had a chance to be on bottom in referee’s position and were given thirty seconds to get an escape point. Neither wrestler was able to do so. The wrestlers finally went into triple overtime and Mission Oak’s wrestler decided to choose bottom. This meant Michael had to ride him out for the next thirty seconds to win the match. After all the sweat and muscle put into the match Michael was not able to keep his opponent on the mat and lost via decision with a score of 3-2.
