For the first time a team in the city of Porterville, Granite Hill’s very own volleyball team, won the CIF Academic Competition.
The “CIF Lexus All Academic Team Award” is an honor that requires a team effort.
To receive this award, a team has to have the highest GPA during fall sports. There are ninety-eight schools that can apply in Granite’s division, the Central Section. The Central Section includes Bakersfield and schools north to Madera. Any school with a 3.0 or higher can apply for the CIF Competition.
This award is based on unweighted Grade Point Averages. Students with AP classes that create a weighted GPA do not count.
“It means they embodied the true spirit of being a student athlete,” said Gary Stoddard, Granite’s athletic director, “In other words, a student first, an athlete second.”
Student athletes constantly look for time to stay on top of their studies.
“I was playing volleyball, I have three AP classes, I am self-employed, I am a journalist on the grizzly gazette, and I’m trying to produce a full length documentary while filling out scholarships and preparing for the army reserve,” said Jody Georgianna, senior on Granite’s volleyball team. “I am also trying to balance family and a boyfriend.”
The coaches at Granite believe it is important for student athletes to budget their time in order to excel and be committed to their team.
“It is a great achievement to find the time to excel in both sports and academics and they should be allotted for that,” said Stoddard.
Twenty-nine volleyball teams applied in the Central Section this year.
“Granite Hills had the highest unweighted GPA of 3.8,” said Rich Lambie, Granite’s volleyball coach, “We get penalized for having AP classes that don’t count. It’s the first time any school in our city has won.”
