On Tuesday, Oct. 25 the Grizzlies give it their all in an effort to hold off the Panthers.
In a fight to the finish, PHS came out on top of all three games with scores of 25-21, 25-23, and 25-23.
“It was a great game,” said Lupita Flores. “I will never forget that game.”
Not only were the Grizzlies anxious to beat their town rivals, they were also in good spirits because it was their Parent’s Night and they were also announcing their charitable donation.
Before the game, each volleyball player’s name was announced as they ran to the crowd to presented their parents with a rose to show their love and gratitude.
“Our Grizzly parents do so much,” said volleyball coach Rich Lambie. “We need to thank them for coming to our games; picking up their children after practice and making dinner for them when they come home.”
Due to this special occasion, the crowd was filled with more parents than there have been during the last few games.
The crowd also had one other special guest attending the game, Verda Leavell. Leavell spends her time making care packages for troops.
“Verda is what a great American is all about,” said Lambie. “She even pays for stuff out of her own pocket to help our troops.”
Leavell fills the care packages with things that Americans use every day such as Chapstick, candy bars, and deodorant. Most people forget that not everyone has the luxury of having these everyday items.
The Grizzlies donated over $250 to Leavell, courtesy of their program Missed Serves, Serving Others.
For every missed serve, the Grizzlies put one quarter into a jar; for every game won, the coaches put in $2. All the money accumulated to over $250 at the end of the season.
“It was so great giving Verda that money,” said coach Bri Yorba. “She was so grateful; she even cried.”
With so much going on that night, the Grizzlies still managed to present the Panthers with a tough game. From the start, it was evident that the Grizzlies were not going down without a fight.
The Grizzlies started off well and managed to keep up with the Panthers all three games.
“We played our hearts out,” said Debra Rodriguez, who managed 3 aces and 19 assists throughout the game.
These players also had a great game: Flores who had 9 kills and 9 digs, Dulce Martinez who had 8 digs, and Carina Felix who had 10 digs that night.
With it being the team’s last home game, the team was upset that ASB failed to decorate the gym or attend the game.
“ASB was not supportive,” said Vanessa Felix. “They didn't even put up signs for us.”
Rodriguez, who is on the volleyball team as well as in ASB argued that the ASB director, Natasha Efseaff, was absent that day and that the last time they tried to make signs, they received detention.
“It’s sad to not have signs our last home game,” said Jody Georgianna. “The other coaches don’t even support us and the football players never come to watch us play.”
The Grizzlies only have one more game to go until their season is over, so all they can do is wish for a better support system next year.
