On Wednesday, Oct. 12, the Granite Hills Grizzlies took on the number one EYL team in the league, Tulare Union.
As the Grizzlies struggled to keep up with the Redskins, they lost all three games, 25-13, 28-26, and 25-14. The first game was not the Grizzlies best game as they tried to battle Tulare Union. In this game, there were many great plays made by both teams.
The Grizzlies started off slow but woke up at the end of the game, but it was too late. Lupita Flores smashed the ball at Union several times and the Redskins could not return it. Flores also successfully blocked many of Unions’ aggressive and powerful spikers.
In the second game, Granite played a very intense game. Granite was able to use the many mistakes Union made, such as missed serves and spikes, to be aggressive and gain points.
The redskins would easily lose control of the ball as they struggled to maintain Flores’ harsh spikes. In a stimulating rally, Wendy Camargo made a major dig, followed by a powerful spike from Debra Rodriguez, which caused Union to start falling apart.
Another rally that took place during the second game required Camargo to dive for a ball, and as she made the point she smacked her hip on the hard gym floor. The Grizzly player had to forget about her painful dive so she could serve to make the next point, which she managed to do.
“We definitely held our own against a first place team,” said Jody Georgianna.
By the end of the second game, the girls were going back and forth with the ball, which required them to win by two since the scores were tied.
“In the next game,” said Mariela Tapia, “I want to stay motivated and pumped up, and not let down.”
In the final match, Tulare Union swept Granite off the court. In the tiring game, Georgianna managed to get several spikes that Union could not return. Also, Mariela Tapia amazingly spiked through two blockers on the opposing team, which frustrated the Redskins.
“I am so proud of the effort that was put into the game tonight,” said Hannah Vehrs. “We put everything we had into it and even though we lost I’m honored that we played the best team in EYL so well.”
