On Wednesday Sept. 28 the Granite Hills Grizzly volleyball team played an aggressive game against Tulare Western.
The Grizzlies gave a great effort, but ended up losing all three games.
In the first game Granite lost 11-25, but there were many exciting rallies.
One play that got the crowd cheering was when Debra Rodriguez spiked on Western. No one thought Western could return the play, but they made an amazing save. What Western did not expect to see was Mariela Tapia quick to smash it back in their faces.
In the second game Western beat the Grizzlies 20-25. Lupita Flores kept the game going by being quick to make impressive digs and sharp spikes. Also, Rodriguez successfully scored more than six points just by her quick and aggressive serves.
The players were boiling with anticipation as they continued to catch up to Western. During this exciting moment, Rodriguez and Carina Felix both jumped up for a block, and while successfully making the point, Felix was injured.
Hannah Vehrs stepped in to take Felix’s place as the coaches examined Felix’s ankle. Many rallies took place with teamwork. Granite won several, but lost some too.
Rodriguez made Western sweat as they tried to anticipate whether she was going to spike the ball or tip it which made Western lose several points throughout the game.
Without a doubt, Felix was back in before the end of the second game.
“I thought we had a very aggressive front row tonight,” said Hannah Vehrs, junior volleyball player, “and I am also proud of Carina for stepping up and getting back in the game.”
Granite put up a great fight in the last game, though they lost 16-25, the girls were proud of their continuous effort.
Jody Georgianna and Lupita Flores made killer hits that made Western cringe whenever they set up to spike.
“I think we did an excellent job,” said Wendy Camargo, senior volleyball player, “We fought to the end and the good thing about it is we all kept our heads up. We kept the fire going all the way to the end; that’s what I love about our team.”
The Grizzlies also look forward to what they can work on for their next game.
“I look forward to actually finishing with 110 percent,” said Jody Georgianna, senior volleyball player.
