City track meet

Granite Hills' track team hosted the 2011 City League Championship on April 20, against rivals' Porterville, Monache and Strathmore high school.

Before the meet began, the Grizzlies warmed-up with two laps around the track and stretched in the middle of the field.

"I am really nervous and scared," said junior Daisy Jimenez.

The field events started at 4:00 p.m. with boys' shot put and discuss.

One of Granite’s top throwers Raul Mata placed first in discuss and threw 140' 6”. Nazardine Abdulla placed second in discuss and threw 138' 7”.

"I worked really hard during practice, I earned first place," said junior Raul Mata.

The first track event was the boys 4x100m with Brandon Avalos, Jose Gonzalez, Juan Gonzalez and Andres Perez. The boys placed third with the time of 47.14.

"This was the first time Juan and Jose ran the 4x100," said Andres Perez, junior at Granite, "but I still think we did okay."

Then came the girls' 800m; Megan Anguiano placed third with the time of 2.45.

Next was the girls Sprint medley (100, 100, 200, 400). Yo Sasorith ran the first 100m, then Stephanie Ruiz ran the second 100m, Carolina Reyes ran the 200m and Angelica Reyes ran the 400m, placing the girls fifth with the time of 3:47.

"Stephanie was sick," said Yo Sasorith, sophomore at Granite, "I think next time we can beat Monache."

Following was the girls' 100m hurdles, Coach Chang was hoping Granites' top hurdlers, Adilene Quintana and Yo Sasorith, would place to earn Granite points.

Quintana placed seventh with a time of 19.7 and Sasorith placed fifth with a time of 19.2 earning Granite only one point.

After the girls' 100m hurdles was the boys’ 110m hurdles. Abraham Leon placed sixth with the time of 18.6 and Raul Mata placed fourth with the time of 17.9.

Then came the boys 4x400 with Brandon Avalos, Andres Perez, Jose Gonzalez and Juan Gonzalez. The boys placed third with time of 3:50.

After the boys relay, came the girls 4x400 with Angelica Reyes, Yo Sasorith, Carolina Reyes and Megan Aguiano. The Ladies placed third with the time of 4:47.

Soon enough was one of the last events scheduled: the 3200. Angelica Reyes was competing with Monaches' top runners Victoria Rutherford and Alysa Alverez. During the race Reyes was in fourth place and slowly increased her speed on the last two laps placing her first with the time of 13:11. Armando Gamdoa ran the boys' 3200 and came in sixth with the time of 11:45.
