The Grizzlies opened the 2011 track season on Thursday, March 3, against Golden West.
"I am really nervous; it’s the first meet of the season," said junior Eddie Gamboa.
As the Grizzlies were about to begin, they stretched and ran two laps around the track trying to shake off their nerves.
The gun shot to start the one mile race; Granite’s strong runners raced into the lead trying to increase their speed throughout the four laps.
Armando Gamboa, a senior at Granite, began the mile strong and came in second with a time of 5:29.
"I did okay, could have done better, maybe next time." said Armando Gamboa senior at Granite
After the mile came 100 hurdle for girls.
"I am scared to fall on my face, I was really nervous," said Yo Sasorith, a sophomore at Granite.
Yo Sasorith, a first year track athlete, placed first in her heat in the 100 hurdles with a time of 23.3.
Then came the boys 400, one lap around the track. Andres Perez took first with the time of 56.8. Second was awarded to Irineo Bernal with the time of 1:02.
"I have to practice hard so I can do better next time," said junior Andres Perez.
Then came the 100 sprints, a very strong part of the team, with Brandon Avalos taking first in his heat with the time of 11.9 and Marcus Nieto with the time of 11.8.
In the 800, only one Lady Grizzly represented Granite, however, Megan Anguiano took first with the time of 2:47.
Because of chilly weather, the Grizzlies ran on the grass to keep warm before the next race started.
Boys and girls were a little frightened about the 300 hurdles. However, the Grizzlies came in at first with Adilene Quintana representing the girls with a time of 56:9 and Abraham Arevalo came in at first for the boys with a time of 48.0.
As the meet came to an end, the two-mile was next for boys and girls. Eduardo Gamboa came in fifth with a time of 13.58 and Angelica Reyes finished with a time of 13.58.
In the four by four boys and girls 1600 relay, the boys came in third with a time of 3:56 and the girls came in third with a time of 4:54
"I am proud of everyone, they did very [well]," said Chris Ross, coach of the track team.
