Track and field is around the corner, practices started Wednesday, Jan. 19, and continues all this week.
“This year more runners would be great; I’m excited to start the season,” said Ingrid Coronel, junior at Granite Hills
The coaches for track and field are Chris Ross and Darren Chang; they were both coaches last year. Ross has been coaching since Granite has opened, as for Chang, this will be his second year coaching the hurdles.
At last week’s meeting, the coaches were very enthusiastic on starting the season.
“We got a lot of new toys (hurdles and timers) for this season,” said Ross with a smile on his face.
Ross also added, this year there’s possibility of beating our cross-town rivals Monache and Porterville High School.
In the meeting there were a lot of new faces and the team seems to have expanded for this year.
Unfortunately, with the budget cut new uniforms could not be ordered but Ross gave his “for sure” for next year.
Ross coaches the boys, girls distance and sprinters, and for the first year he will be coaching long jump. Ross has been taking some classes on how to teach the jumpers how to long jump and for the new ones who plan on doing the event.
Chang will be coaching the hurdlers for his second year. He will teach the new hurdlers how to perfect their jump while sprinting. Chang has many activities planned for this year, with the new short hurdles; the new guys will have the chance to jump over the hurdle without being scared.
“I’m really excited to join track, the event I want to do is hurdles,” said Ismael Ruiz, a sophomore at Granite Hills
The first meet is Feb. 25.
