On Tuesday, May 3, the Lady Grizzlies turned in their line-up as they were ready to play ball. The Marauders were a little late from the bus ride, but that didn’t stop them from an aggressive battle.
For the Lady Grizzlies it was their last home game of the season, so they left everything on the field. Head coach Terry Williams, of Granite, ordered a rose for each senior and gave an inspirational speech.
Senior Tommi Harlien represented Williams with a ball signed by the entire varsity team. At this time both the Grizzlies and the Marauders were ready to play.
“This was a good season; I’m glad we all are close and come together as a team. We had some high and low times, but we always pushed through,” stated senior Harlien.
The first inning the game started off with Paige Simmons hitting to Granite Hills second base Bailey Conley. Simmons was called safe as she advanced to each base, and was hit home by another player.
The Grizzlies were up to bat, but nothing worked, sophomore Ashlee Halopoff was the first batter of the game. She tried to bunt to get on base, but she hit it too hard making her out at first. Kelsey Blackburn was up and grounded out to second base. Harlien also grounded out to third. The score is 1-0.
The second inning, the Lady Grizzlies were still unable to score. Leaving the Marauders scoring two more runs, the score was now 3-0.
The third inning the Grizzlies picked up the pace as runners got on and scored. The Grizzlies score two by hitting, and running off of the Marauders mistakes. For Monache, left field, Maria West hit a bomb over left fields fence. Over the fence, she was able to count her run and other teammates. The score was officially, 5-2 Monache in the lead.
“That was a good hit, it was unexpected, but we did the best we could and fought ‘till the end,” said junior Debra Rodriguez.
The fourth inning, the game really increased speed as the Grizzlies was able to catch up with Monache, and actually took the lead. Granite capitalized on Monache’s mistakes, as did Monache but they were as successful. The ending score was, 6-5.
The fifth inning, the Grizzlies gave Monache a scare because they were in the lead. But that didn’t stop the Marauders from scoring. They scored two as the Grizzlies stayed strong with their defense. The score is now, 8-6, Monache taking the lead.
The sixth inning the Grizzlies were only down by three, their heads were still in the game. But Monache took charge and continually scored. Run after run, the Grizzlies slowly knew how it was going to end. The score is now, 6-11.
“By this time, we basically just had fun and finished the game. I am very proud of my Grizzlies for always giving it their all and fighting and never giving up,” said senior Nayely Reyes.
The last inning the Grizzlies and the Marauders both held their own by having good sportsmanship, and class. Both teams finished strong, but Monache took the “W.” The ending score of the game was, 6-11.
Even through it was the Grizzlies last home game, they still have two more this season. The next game will be against the Porterville Panthers at their house, on May 10.
