As the Lady Grizzlies loaded up the bus with bats and gloves, they knew it was a game for survival.

With Tulare Union being Division 1, and Granite in Division 5; it would be a miracle if the Lady Grizzlies won.

“I was so nervous when we got there, I knew our full potential, and it really showed!” said catcher, Kelsey Blackburn.

When the Lady Grizzlies arrived at the field, they did a quick warm up. The game started in the first inning with the Grizzlies up to bat scoring none. Then the teams switched and Redskins batted one in, the score, 1-0.

The second inning hard defense for both teams paid off. Both teams scored none, with the score still being 1-0, the Redskins in the lead.

Unfortunately, in the third inning the Redskins score another run due to an error by the Grizzlies. While the Grizzlies were up to bat, nothing seemed to work. Bunting, hitting or walking, was not an option. The score was now, 2-0, Redskins taking the lead.

“We really pulled together as a team, it wasn’t because of one player, it’s because we are a team,” said pitcher Kaitlin Fife.

The fourth inning the Lady Grizzlies were able to score one, and still have hope to win the game. The Redskins scored none with the current score, 2-1.

The fifth inning tensions ran high, as both teams did not score. For the Lady Grizzlies there were three quick outs. The ground balls were hit to shortstop, Debra Rodriguez; second base, Bailey Conley; and a pop-fly hit to center field, Lupita Flores. The score was still, 2-1.

In the sixth inning, the Lady Grizzlies advanced by stealing bases and Chelsea Dillahunty hit a ball right over shortstop’s head to score two. The Redskins also scored to by stealing bases. The score was now, 4-3, the Redskins still in the lead.

“The game was so close, anything could have happened, but what made us win, was the drive and will to win. We all knew we could do it, we just had to believe,” said Dillahunty.

With the Grizzlies only down by one, they wanted to win this game more than any other.

The seventh and final inning the Lady Grizzlies had two runners on base with Flores up to bat. Flores hit a clutch hit to left field and rolled all the way to the fence. Both runners scored and Flores hit a triple.

“It was VERY intense and very fun, a battle of who wanted it more and in the end, we did!” stated Flores.

The ending score was 5-4, the Grizzlies won the game! The Grizzlies were very excited knowing that they beat a Division 1 school.

The Lady Grizzlies get ready to face the Monache Marauders, for their last home game of the season.

The game is on Tuesday, May 3.
