The Granite Hills Grizzlies had an impressive start in their home opener against the Delano Tigers on Friday night.

Out in the pool area of Granite Hills High School, there was a bit of a scare. The main question running through administrations minds was “Will there be a girl’s water polo team this year?”

As the first and second week of school flew by, Head coach Mike Chapman had to get at least ten girls to make a full water polo team to be able to practice and play.

“Water polo is a tough sport that pushes you 100%, but at the end of the day it’s a sport I’m proud to be a part of,” said Megan Carazolez, junior at Granite. “Its fun, competitive, and my teammates are the best. They make every practice fun!”

As of now, Granite has their full water polo team and is getting ready for a competitive season. With only two returning players who are juniors, Ashlee Halopoff and Savannah Pipkin, the water polo team quickly racked up their numbers to form a Varsity team including five freshman, one sophomore, and four juniors.

“I was playing volleyball before I played water polo and I wasn’t sure what to do, but once I tried water polo I absolutely loved it!” stated Isabel Ayala, sophomore at Granite. “Water polo is a great, aggressive sport! It’s an amazing way to stay in shape while also having fun.”

Now that the question has been answered, there are no worries about making a team. Chapman is working on plays and positions in practice as the girls are also learning the game.

“Well we were all thinking about the water polo teams, we have the best pool but thanks to our amazing recruiting coaches we have a girls team that has a bright future ahead of them,” states athletic director Gary Stoddard.
