The Granite Hills girls varsity tennis team competed in the East Yosemite League on Friday, Oct. 21. The girls did an excellent job and played very hard.

For EYL, each team in the league was allowed to take two singles players and two doubles teams. For Granite, the singles girls were Andrea Carranza and Berenice Contreras, and the doubles teams were Lisa Yang and Kelsey Blackburn, and Kathleen Jurkovich and Brandy Ibarra

Carranza's first game was against a girl from Delano High School. She lost a well fought match, 3-8. She was a little under the weather and was having problems seeing the ball. Since the tournament was single elimination, Carranza was not able to advance to the next round.

"I didn't know what to expect going into the match," stated Carranza. "I wasn't sure if I could play my best due to the cough I had. But overall, it was worth the trip and I had a lot of fun."

Things looked a little better for Contreras; her first match was against a Ceaser Chavez High School player. She won a close game of 9-8 with a tiebreaker of 9-7. Her next game was against Monache's number 2 player Dahlia Martinez. She lost a tough match 0-6, 0-6.

The doubles team of Jurkovich and Ibarra played their first match against a doubles team from Tulare Western. Unfortunately they lost 6-8, and were unable to move onto the next round.

"I was bummed when we lost; It's my senior year and I wanted to go out with a bang," said Jurkovich. "But for it being my first time going to EYL, I think we did our best and that's all I could ask for."

Things looked a lot better for the doubles team of Yang and Blackburn, as they were lucky enough to be seeded number two in the league. Their first match was against the doubles team from Robert F. Kennedy High School, and they won a quick match of 8-1. Their second game was against a doubles team from Tulare Union, and they also won that game, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Because they won both matches they moved onto the third round which was held on Saturday, Oct. 22. The girls first match was against Monache, and they lost 6-7 (2-7), 2-6. Because only the final four teams move onto the third round, each team had to play two games, to determine first, second, third and fourth place.

Yang and Blackburn ended up having to play the same team that Jurkovich and Ibarra lost to in the first round. They played a well fought match and won 6-4, 6-2, earning them the third place title

Each team that made it to the second day also qualified to go to individual Valley. Unfortunately, Yang and Blackburn were unable to go due to previous engagements the day Valley was scheduled to be held.

"I was so bummed when I found out we couldn't go to valley," stated Yang. "It was going to be my first time ever going to valley, because last year my partner and I didn't make it. But, I always have next year! So, I’m looking forward to it."

The whole girls varsity team also qualified to go to team Valley, but were unable to attend that as well due to a choir concert on the night of the scheduled match.

"The girls did a fantastic job this year," said girls tennis coach Randy Smee. "I'm so proud of every one of my girls, and I am sad that they worked so hard to earn the chance to go to valley and not go. It seems wrong for the seniors on the team to not even get a chance to play."

The girls finished their season very strong and with a league record of 10-6 and a overall record of 12-9. They will be having their dinner and awards night on Friday, Nov. 5.
