Granite Hills varsity girls soccer team is taking sports to a new level. After winning their first playoff game against the Lindsay Cardinals, they are on to their second game.
Head coach, Gabe Rodriguez, has very high hopes for the girls and their game today. They are travelling to Sierra High School today, Feb.17.
The farthest girls soccer has ever gone was five years ago when Rodriguez was assistant coach, they won Valley Finals in 2005-2006. Last year, they upset Kingsburg in the first round of playoffs.
“For fans to go watch us at Sierra would be asking a lot, there are great kids, and good athletes on our team, so it would be nice to be supported,” said Rodriguez.
“Currently, we are upsetting the number one seed, if we beat them, we can beat anybody. It would boost our confidence to a new level and we can compete against anybody,” continued Rodriguez.
For the boys football playoffs, former principal Michael Stockdale arranged to get a rooter bus for all the supporters with the help of spirit club adviser Natasha Efseaff.
Efseaff is the JV soccer coach who plans on going to the game today. Soccer and spirit club are two things that Efseaff is in charge of, so the idea of a rooter bus was not what was exactly on her mind.
“Right now I am coaching soccer, so I have to put the spirit club on hold, I am concentrating on the girls. Also, there is a new change in administration so its different. People who would want to go on the rooter bus would need, parent and teacher approval, because soccer is during school instead of football, which was after school. In football, traveling didn’t interfere,” stated Efseaff.
Jeff Bottoms, the new principal at Granite, is new to all of the ideas of many teachers.
“No one asked me for a rooter bus. Although, Ms. Efseaff did ask for support for the girls JV. But, today she is taking some of her players to the varsity game, they are already cleared and ready to support their fellow peers,” said Bottoms.
