Close game with Chavez

By Dylan KnightThis game was an emotional game for the whole team. It was the last home game for the lady Grizzlies, and for half of the team, this was the last home soccer game ever going to be played.
Captains were escorted by all seniors for the coin toss and the remainder of the team formed a tunnel for the seniors to run through after the toss.
“This was my last home game,” said senior goalie, Sonia Stewart. “I’m going to miss soccer.”
Single roses were also given to each senior soccer player.
But what was supposed to be an easy win for the lady Grizzlies, turned out to be a blood-bath.
“Their girls were doing a lot of high kicks,” said freshman forward, Yadira Figueroa.
The ball stayed in Titan territory for the majority of the time, but a few quick passes sent the ball into the Granite field, leaving goal opportunities for Chaves.
A warning was given to senior defender, Andrea Rodriguez after a quick scuffle between players.
“They were dirty, dirty, dirty,” said junior defender, Deisy Ramos.
In the second half, as coach Gabe Rodriguez always says, came down to who wanted it more.
28 minutes into the second half, with a cross from sophomore, Mercedes Steidley, and a head from senior, Jessica Yocum, the ball ended up in the Chavez goal which finally brought the score up, 1-0.
“It was chaos in the box,” said Yocum. “Somehow it went in.”
The rest of the game was uneventful to the score, but not to fouls.
A yellow card was given to Rodriguez and a Chavez player after another scuffle.
“Their players were dirty,” said senior, Yesenia Samano. “They got in a fight with one of our best players, but we’ve got this in playoffs.”
The final whistle blew and the Grizzlies had to settle with a weak victory.
“We should have done better,” said junior, Carolina Reyes. “We just need to get motivated.”
The lady Grizzlies now have their fingers crossed that there will be another home game in playoffs and a chance to redeem themselves.
“I don’t want this to be my last game,” said senior, Stephanie Ruiz.
The next girls’ soccer game will be away at Tulare Western on Wed. Feb. 10.
