Even though the game started around 7:30 p.m., the Lady Grizzlies had the fire to put up a fight.
On Monday, Jan. 30, the Granite Hills Grizzlies hosted a home game against the Caesar Chavez Titans.
As both teams lined up for the beginning of the game, the ball was tossed and hit to Lupita Flores. As Ashlee Halopoff took the point guard position, she passed it around the three point line to finally get it back and scored the first three points of the game. With the Grizzlies playing good defense, the Titans were unable to score.
“I think the game went good; we were working together, but we did have a few mistakes which led us to our loss,” stated Kelsey Blackburn.
The quarter ended with number 12 scoring for the Titans with three points added to the score. After a close first quarter the ending score was 14-14, one foul on Halopoff.
As the second quarter started, the ball was in the Grizzlies’ possession, but soon switched to the Titans due to an errant pass. As the Grizzlies got the ball back; Yo Sasorith took it down the court. As Halopoff got the ball, she passed to Flores who then found Sasorith cut to the basket to add another two points to the score. Halopoff dribbled the ball down the court again, this time she passed to Elena Galvez, who relayed it to Sasorith for two more points.
This second quarter ended with the Grizzlies unable to score. The ending score of the second quarter was 21-23, Titans. There was four team fouls for the Grizzlies and 3 for the Titans.
“They would have stayed in the game, if they would have kept playing aggressive,” stated Jairo Madrigal, a bystander watching the game.
After half time, the Grizzlies came out advancing their defense while the Titans picked up their offense. The ball was in the Titans favor. After a bad pass, Halopoff stole the ball and passed it around the three point line and found Flores inside for a successful two points. As Flores recovered the bad pass, she found Sasorith once again open under the basket, adding two points.
By the end of the third quarter, the Grizzlies were unable to score in the last few minutes. The ending score was 37-35, Grizzlies. Meagan Carazolez received her first personal foul in the last few seconds, Grizzlies with 5 team fouls, Titans 4.
During the fourth and final quarter, Sasorith took the ball to the hoop on a fast break to get fouled and shoot two. She made one of two. As Flores took the ball out, she spotted Galvez down the court for another two points. After getting another foul, Flores passed to Marisol Cerda to get a successful two points. Sasorith got fouled in the last 5 seconds of the game. As she made the first shot, she was instructed to miss the second, but time expired for their plans.
The ending score for end of the game was 52-54, Titans took the win. The Grizzlies had 7 team fouls, as the Titans had 10.
“Untimely turnovers and poor free throw shooting. A called technical set us back 5 points instantly, when we were pretty much in control of the game,” stated Coach Lozano. “Players need to learn and move on from their mistakes. Ball control and crisp passes set the tone of that game. We could have had that game vs. the Titans.”
The next home game for the Lady Grizzlies is Friday Feb. 3 against the Monache Mauraders.
