Kebu Stewart, the junior varsity coach for the Granite Hills Grizzlies, has a passion for the game of basketball that is noticeable from miles away.

Stewart grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He started his career playing high school basketball at Our Savior Lutheran in the Bronx, New York.

By his senior year in high school he was recruited to play college basketball at every Division I college in America.

“It felt great to be wanted by every top basketball program in the country. I proved that [ I could compete at Division 1 level] that since my freshman year in high school! Great experience,” stated Stewart.

He chose to play at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for three years, 1993-95.

“I gained a lot of exposure at UNLV like being on ESPN every night playing, and being in a town with UNLV being the only basketball team and being coached by hall of fame coaches. In Vegas all out games were sold out, there were about 15,000 per game,” stated Stewart.

After those years he transferred to Cal State University Bakersfield where he was 1997 MVP of the Division II National Championship game. He played there from 1995-97.

“In Bakersfield my experience was terrific, that town loved me from the first day I stepped into that town; they embraced me with open arms and the community [were] my biggest supporters. Bakersfield [has] been very loyal to me throughout my college career, it’s been a great journey with them,” stated Stewart.

Stewart had the experience of a lifetime. The following year he was drafted by the Philadelphia 76’ers to play in the NBA. In 2006 Stewart was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame.

Stewart’s jersey now hangs proudly in Springfield, Massachusetts in the Basketball Hall of Fame.

“It’s an unbelievable honor to be one of the few college basketball players to have my jersey hanging there with other great college and NBA players, it shows me the appreciation and respect that Hall of Fame has for me and my basketball skills. I will always cherish that, and one day I can take my kids down to the Hall of Fame and show them what I accomplished and hopefully they will follow in my footsteps and continue their dad’s legacy,” stated Stewart.

As time passed Kebu has taken some time to relocate to Porterville, where he and his new family could live.

“Well I had a job opportunity at my old college at Cal State Bakersfield to be an assistant coach, and my wife and I decided to move closer to Bakersfield instead of commuting all the way from Los Angeles, where we were living. And plus, my wife was having twins and we thought it would be good to be close to her family here [in Porterville] while she’s having the twins to help out just in case I have to be working in Bakersfield,” stated Stewart.
