Granite Hills Lady Grizzlies played against The Porterville Panthers and gave it their all and fought until the end.

First quarter ended with the score 14-4, with Porterville in the lead. Granite allowed numerous points due to lack of boxing out. Megan Walker and Alia Alvarez were the two main players for Porterville that made an impact on Granite.

“They were off to a good start, but communication was a problem. These girls can play; it just wasn’t our night,” said fan, Janice Halopoff.

By halftime the score was 28-14; Porterville still in the lead. During half- time the Lady Grizzlies knew that what they were doing was not working. Half way through the third quarter, the Grizzlies picked up the pace. Unfortunately, the turnovers assisted the loss of the Grizzlies. Walker hit a three to advance PHS to a 39-20 lead by the end of third quarter. The Grizzlies fought for every jump ball, but were out ruled by all of the Panther’s outside shooters.

“The girls have been playing really well. The last two games before the PHS game were great! I think that this game was an emotional game for the girls. The number of turnovers during the game was higher than usual, and really contributed to this loss,” said another fan, Barbara Means.

Porterville ended up to a 50-23 lead when Chelsea James scored on a lay-up. Granite’s center Emily Fechner scored inside many times and was fouled. The three-point play that made the score to 50-28. Fechner concluded a 12-0 point streak when she scored again and was fouled. She then made another three-point play to bump up the score to 50-35.

“I feel like our emotions got the best of us and we didn’t show our full potential.” said Fechner.

For PHS, Alvarez scored a total of 13 points; Walker had a total of 11 points; James had eight points and Savannah Ertl contributed to six points.

For Granite, Yo Sasorith had eight points.

The Grizzly eyes were slowly closing as the few seconds ran down on the clock. It was a tough competition for both teams, but the Porterville Panthers took the win.

“We could have played better; I think that when we play Porterville or Monache, we think too much about how they are our rivals [rather] than just another team. We beat ourselves, not the other team,” said Taylor Means.

The next home game for the Lady Grizzlies is Jan. 21. against the Delano Tigers. This is the start of the second round of EYL. The Grizzlies still have another chance to prove to every school, what they bring to the table will pay off.
