Commentary: An unforgettable football season

The 2011 Football season did not have the end that everybody was hoping for.
Nonetheless, the season was still filled with excitement, happiness and fun filled moments.
I learned a lot from this football season and a lot from my teammates. It’s not always about the big plays or the big hits; it’s about helping out your brothers on the team and going through the hard losses and the great wins together.
Even though we lost in the playoffs, I still think this season was full of success. We accomplished a lot of things that most Grizzly football teams never did: we were able to make it to the playoffs in back to back seasons.
We were also able to pull off a 22-21 victory over Porterville, which was probably the highlight of most of my team member’s entire high school careers, including mine. Even with all the controversy behind that game, it’s still going to be a game that I will never forget. It was also the game where our team finally came together and realized what we could accomplish if we all worked together.
This season we were also close to becoming city champs. We had a good comeback going against Monache, but we just simply ran out of time and the referees weren’t making any calls that went in our favor. Either way, it should have been another win for Granite Hills.
Besides all that, this season was still really good. We had some trouble along the way with players getting into bad situations, but we made it through all of that and I believe it actually brought us closer together as a team.
That’s why I believe that the toughest thing for me is going to watch all the seniors we had this year graduate and know that I’ll never be able to play with them again. Last year, as a sophomore, I was able to play with them on varsity while they were juniors, so I feel like I really got to know who these guys were.
The majority of our team consisted of seniors, so it will be a huge transition next year not having all the talented players we had this year. Our offense was made up of 10 seniors and one junior, the only junior being me. So for next year we will basically have 10 new players on offense, most of which have never really played varsity football.
This will bring some trouble for next year because our team won’t be as familiar with each other as we were this year. We will all have to learn each other’s habits and all the tendencies we use to play. None the less, I’m still looking forward to making next year another memorable season because whether I like it or not, this could be the last year of football I ever play.
Even though I do still have next year to continue playing football, I still wish that our football season was still going. The season simply felt too short, it felt like it should have kept going on.
The week after we lost the playoffs I still felt like I had practice the following Monday. It was hard to believe that the season was really over, and to this day it still really hasn’t sunk in. It’s hard to believe that something you can love so much can all of a sudden just stop and be taken away from you. Four years of high school football just isn’t enough!
Football has taught me so many things that I wouldn’t have learned on my own. It taught how to be a team member, how to work together, how to accept others, how to communicate, how to bond with others, how to win, how to handle defeat, how to handle adversity, but most of all Football has given me character and has taught me how to be a well-rounded person.
Some see football as just a sport where big guys just go out onto a field and hit each other, but it’s a lot more than what a lot of people see it as. It’s a game of wits and strategies that has the perk of being able to just knock somebody out.
It’s just a great feeling being able to put on your pads every day afterschool for practice or on game nights and being able to go out and have fun with your friends playing the sport you love. For me. there’s just simply no greater joy.
