Friday, Oct. 14, was another amazing evening at Granite Hills when the Grizzlies shut out the RFK Thunderbirds with a 44-0 game for their 2011 homecoming.
The Grizzlies won their last homecoming against the Mission Oaks Hawks in their 2010 season with a score of 24-0 and planned on doing it again.
The Grizzlies scored their first possession to set the tone for their game with a 47 yard touchdown reception by Running Back Brandon Avalos. Miguel Zamparrilla added the extra point to make the score 7-0. Miguel Zamparilla ended up being a perfect 4 out of 4 at the end of the night in PAT’s
The Grizzlies scored on their next possession, taking advantage of the already tired and confused Thunderbird Defense. Full Back, Naserdine “Big Naz” Abdulha (2011 Granite Hills Homecoming King) would end up bull dozing his way into the end zone from 5 yards out giving the Grizzlies a two score lead.
However, the Thunderbirds gave the Grizzlies a scare after recovering a muffed punt on the Grizzlies 15 yard line. But two plays later, the Grizzlies’ Safety, Mark Bernal would end up making a leaping interception and returning the ball back to the Thunderbird 40 yard line to put the Grizzlies back at ease.
On the Grizzlies last offensive possesion for the first half, the Grizzlies would end up scoring on their first play from scrimmage with a 67 yard touchdown reception by Wide Reciever Dante Cunningham. Cunningham leaped into the end-zone, untouched and gave the Grizzlies a 21-0 lead going into Halftime.
“I thought the game was actually entertaining,” said cheerleader Madison Rice “I think it really gave our football players confidence, especially since the other team didn’t score at all.”
The Grizzlies came out strong the second half both offensively and defensively, scoring relentlessly and running out the clock while not allowing the Thunderbirds to gain any momentum on offense.
Avalos scored two more rushing touchdowns, which gave the Grizzlies a comfortable lead. Jairo Madrigal added on the 2 point conversion after Avalos’ first second half touchdown.
“It was exciting for me to watch because we won and it was homecoming,” stated ASB member Ernestina Quintero. “The win just made the night perfect.”
Joey Carillio, Junior Tight End, scored on a reception from 52 yards out, zooming by the defense and winning the foot race to the end zone. The Grizzlies ended the game with a final score of Granite Hills 44, Robert F. Kennedy 0.
“I was really glad when we won. Winning home coming for me was like winning the Championship game, having a shutout made it even better,” stated Defensive End Raul Mata.
This was the second straight year that the Grizzlies won in a shutout on their homecoming. This game will definitely give the Grizzlies some motivation for next week’s game as they travel to Tulare to take on the Mission Oaks Hawks on their homecoming night.
“What I really liked was that we came out fast and scored right away, which is something that we are going to try to do against every team especially going into playoffs. Reason being that it’s going to make it harder for teams to stop us. We also played good defense against them and shut them out,” stated Head Coach David Coldiron.
