The Granite Hills Grizzlies had an impressive start in their home opener against the Delano Tigers on Friday night.
The Grizzlies kicked off to the Tigers to start off the game and were able to recover a fumble to give the Grizzlies great field position. A couple of plays later the Grizzlies were able to score the first points of the game when Brandon Avalos snatched a pass out of the air for a touchdown reception, giving the Grizzlies a 6-0 lead.
Once again after kicking the ball off to the Tigers, the Grizzlies were able to recover a Delano fumble to give the Grizzlies the ball. The Grizzly offense was able to push the ball down the field to what seemed to be another Grizzly score, but came up short.
For a while it seemed as if the Grizzlies losing streak to Delano would be coming to an end. However, the Delano offense overpowered the Grizzly defense and scored on consecutive drives.
“The defense just got worn out,” stated varsity football player Jairo Madrigal. “We stopped hustling and rallying to the ball. If we had more fresh guys, the game would have ended to our favor.”
The Delano offense controlled the rest of the game with their big play ability. It wasn’t until the first drive of the second half that Grizzlies started to show a little life again.
The Grizzly offense was able to blast the ball down the field on a 70 yard scoring drive and ended it by a Brandon Avalos 8 yard touchdown run. However, that touchdown would not be enough to help them win the game. as the final score was Delano 42, Granite Hills 12.
“I hate that we lost the way we did especially because I know we’re a lot better than the way we played, but I’m not going to let this bring me down. This loss just means that we have to work twice as hard to get to where we deserve to be and that’s the playoffs,” said Quarterback Fernando Gonzalez.
The Grizzlies continue their hunt in the EYL going up Against Ceasar Chavez of Delano this Friday at Chavez stadium. The Grizzlies achieved their first win in two seasons last year against Chavez at Jacob Rankin Stadium and plan to get another Victory against them to bring their record up to 2-2 and keep their playoff hopes alive.
