Granite Hills High School’s offensive Fullback and inside Linebacker Nasredine “Big Naz” Abdulla is hoping for the best this year and many years to come.
Abdulla first became inspired to play football from his older brother, Joseph Abdulla.
“I would always put his football pads on; I just liked how it felt, and watching the games made me anxious to play,” said Abdulla.
Abdulla is confident and proud of his teammates this year because players are showing their hard work continuously
“Returning seniors are actually coming to practice and are dedicated to the team,” said Abdulla. “We did well during our passing tournaments over the summer, winning the Woodlake Tournament and beating Garces [a school in Bakersfield] for the championship.”
Along with high expectations for the team, he also expects a great amount from himself.
“I want to win first team all-league honors, on both offense and defense, get the most offensive rushing yards, and carry my team to the championship,” said Abdulla.
Abdulla recently took a trip to Ohio to a football combine and was given the opportunity to train as an actual professional football player.
“I felt high class because they treated us like pros. I got interviewed as if I was already a professional football player,” said Abdulla. “The coaches told us to get used to it, because it was just a little taste of what was to come in the future.”
Varsity Coach Coldiron is proud to say that one of his players was chosen to go to Ohio.
“It’s exciting to see that people recognize GHHS athletes. He’s been a positive influence and he sets a positive example for all athletes,” said coach David Coldiron.
A teacher of Abdulla, Mrs. Rodriguez, speaks positively about his work in the classroom.
“He is a very enthusiastic student; he has a positive attitude and he always encourages others. Naz always finds some way to brighten up the class,” said Rodriguez.
The values that are taken from football are important to Abdulla. They benefit in ways that are good both on and off the field.
“Football teaches you respect for your teammates, yourself, the coaches, and the game all around. You get to know yourself better and learn how to have a positive attitude,” said Abdulla.
Abdulla finds that a bond is intriguing, seeing all his teammates as a family.
“The bond between us is more like we’re brothers,” said Abdulla. “I’ll never forget our greatest moments on the field and I will never forget them. They’re the kind of teammates I want to tell my kids about years from now.”
Tight end, junior, Joey Carrillo is a teammate to Abdulla on and off the field. They work together on achieving the highest goals that can be reached.
“Naz is always there when I need to push myself even harder, stay focused and make myself better,” stated Carrillo. “He is like an older brother that is going to be there for me. After high school I hope to see him on T.V. living his dream.”
Abdulla is hoping for a chance to play in college.
“My greatest desire is to go to a Division 1 college, but as long as I get to play, it doesn’t matter what college I go to,” said Abdulla.
