After three weeks of exhausting practice, the Granite Hills Grizzlies looked forward to the Fridays Season Opener against the Strathmore Spartans.
All the hard work and dedication would be put to the test when both teams would clash as soon as the opening kickoff commenced.
Right from the start it was evident that this was going to be a close game.
Both teams worked hard and fast and after seeing how well each team could play, they both realized that they underestimated each other. The Spartans were able to score on their opening drive giving them a 7-0 lead by wearing down the Grizzly defense with their run game. However, on the Grizzlies first offensive drive the Grizzlies showed they would not let down so easily.
Running back Brandon Avalos was able to score for the Grizzlies on a 64 yard Touchdown reception to make the score 7-6. On the PAT ( Point After Touchdown) Jairo Madrigal caught a 2-point conversion to give the Grizzlies an 8-7 lead.
The Grizzly lead did not last long when the Spartans were able to bomb a pass down the field to one of their receivers to give them the lead once again. But one again, the explosive Grizzlies were able to punch the Spartan Defense right in the mouth and push them down the field to end the drive with a rushing touchdown by Fullback Naserdine( Big Naz) Abdulha. The PAT was successful with the Kicker Miguel Zamparria blastin the ball right through the uprights to give the Grizzlies the 15-14 lead.
Both teams kept going back and forth scoring on almost every offensive drive. It was until 2 minutes before the end of the first half that Grizzlies got a key defensive stop when Linebacker Joey Carrillo intercepted the Spartan pass to end the first half with a Grizzly lead.
The Grizzlies received the ball to start the second half and were able to score a long touchdown reception by Avalos to give the Grizzlies a solid 35-22 lead. However, that was still not enough to assure the Grizzlies a win.
Both teams kept going at it but it was evident that the Grizzly defense seemed worn out from most players having to play both ways (offense and defense) and the Grizzlies allowed the Spartans to score when they had the ball, which eventually led to the Spartan 43-35 victory on Friday night.
“Simple mistakes were what cost us the game,” said Coach David Coldiron after the game.
It was plain to see that this game did not end up how the Grizzlies were hoping for and that this would not be a reoccurring thing for this Explosive Grizzly Football Team.
The Grizzlies have already moved on and are looking forward to playing against the top seeded Division 5 Lindsay Cardinals today and also looking forward to showing everybody what Grizzly Football is really all about. Grizzly Football is on its way back to what it used to be and that is definitely clear to see by just watching a Grizzly game and seeing how hard those players work.
