On Wednesday Nov. 2, the Granite Hills Cross Country team competed against several schools in the 2011 EYL meet.
The schools that competed were: Porterville, Monache, Delano, Mission Oak, Tulare Western, Cesar Chavez, Tulare Union, and R.F. Kennedy.
Granite Hills coach, Chris Ross, did not receive a map of the course or a schedule of the events. The Granite runners did not know what events to expect and this made it difficult to compete.
Josh Mahurien, junior at Granite said, “We stuck together pretty good as a team, but I don’t think we did as well as we wanted to.”
The Granite girls began warming up before the boys because the girls were expecting to start first, but it turned out that the boys were running first.
“We didn’t know when the varsity boys’ race was going to begin so we were unsure of when to begin warming up and stretching,” said Mario Madrigal, senior Granite runner.
The course was different and the Granite runners did not know what to expect.
“The course began with a large dip into grass and then we went on a dirt road for a while,” said Mahurien, “Then we did a loop around more grass and after we did the first part we basically did the whole thing over again. I didn’t like the course, it was to repetitive, grassy, and flat.”
The Granite runners were confused even as they were running.
“I had to ask a Monache runner during the race how much longer the course was because we didn’t know the course,” said Martin Ayala, senior Granite runner.
Sophomore Jose Gonzalez received second, senior Oscar Campos received third, and junior Zachary Paulson received first.
“We did okay, but not as well as I thought we would,” said Ross.
