The heart of the squad

Sophomore Kyllen Keene, a student in Head Coach Mindy Boyer’s severely handicap county class at Granite Hills High School, became a member of the cheer squad this year.

Keene lights up the sidelines each football game with her beaming smile.

“This has been a great experience for Kyllen; she has changed so much this year and is so much more social,” said Boyer. “She wouldn’t speak to people before, now cheer is all she talks about; her face lights up when anyone asks her about it. I’d like to thank all of my girls for opening their hearts and having tolerance and patience. It’s a testimony to who they are. They have made a difference in Kyllen’s life.”

When summer practices began, Keene was extremely enthusiastic about being part of the squad.

Keene continues to attend practice daily and never stops giving it her all.

“Having Kyllen as a cheerleader is fun. She always brings a smile everyone’s face and she does her best. Cheer definitely wouldn’t be the same without her,” stated Savannah Cunningham, a JV cheerleader who cheers with Keene.

Having Keene on the squad demonstrates that even when someone has a disability, they can still participate in school activities or anything they set their mind to.

Keene serves as a role model to her classmates and community.

“I attend every JV home game and I always notice Kyllen’s infectious smile; it makes me really proud to be a part of a school that is so accepting,” stated Maria Corona, a junior at Granite.

Keene is truly the heart of the squad, giving it her all and not letting her disability stop her from achieving her dream, a lesson everyone should live by.

“I’m very proud of how hard she is working at this; it gives her so much motivation,” stated Denise Keene, mother of Kyllen. “She really has shown growth. We see how she has improved her social skills. Watching her with the other girls is so awesome.”

This is good to hear. Kyllen should not let anything get in her way, go for what she wants and don't stop until it's hers. Good job :D
