Team Optimistic After Opening Game

The Granite Hills boys water polo team opened their season with a 0-13 loss against Bakersfield’s Garces High School.
“I knew that for a lot of players it was going to be their first game, so I took this first game as a learning experience,” said newcomer Michael Cruz. “Our players are now more familiar with the game play and hopefully we adjust to it.”
Monday night’s game took place at the Granite Hills aquatic center. The disappointing loss left the team fired up and ready to practice harder than before to turn their season around.
“We will swim harder as that was the main factor of today’s loss,” said coach Mitchell Rice. “Mistakes were made by not: being vocal, getting into the right positions, defending correctly, and working as a functional team.”
With only a few returning players, the chances of having a team looked grim just days before the start of the school year. Heavy recruiting contributed to today’s 12 man team.
Because the team was put together at such short notice, the players only had 3 weeks of practice for conditioning and plays.
Garces’ quick scoring gained a 6 point lead early in the first quarter, then slowed as the Grizzlies got accustomed to their defensive positions.
“By the time the second half ended,” said team member Clayton Congdon, “we had already improved a lot.”
The season opener was not only the first game of the year for the Grizzlies, but was also the first game ever for a majority of the players.
“We'll take all of this day by day, starting with taking practice more seriously. I'm looking forward to a fun, successful season!” said Cruz.
