Basketball season officially began Tuesday night when the Grizzlies boys basketball team faced the Strathmore Spartans in their first game of the Strathmore-Lindsay tournament.
It was easy to see that this team was much different from last season’s team.
Even with the loss of two very important players, Tello Guzman and Erik Bartlett, who were both seniors last year, the Grizzlies were able to lead a very well rounded attack. Many players played key roles in Tuesday night’s game and contributed enormously to their win.
David Pena played a huge role in their victory scoring 17 points, 12 of which came from four three-pointers. Blas Roman and Ralphie Ortiz also contributed to the win combing for 18 Grizzly points.
At the end of the first quarter, the Grizzlies held the lead with a score of 10-2. The Grizzlies stingy defense and fast paced offense was what helped keep the Grizzlies on top.
It is clear to see that the Grizzlies will be great tenders this year due to their ability to shoot the ball from anywhere on the court. However, their greatest weakness may come in their size.
“I feel like the boys did a really good job and I think they have a really good chance to win a lot of games this year,” said Ashlee Halopoff.
The Grizzlies won’t have much of a size advantage once they begin EYL play, but as for the Strathmore game, their size seemed to be more than adequate. The Grizzlies were able to get many offensive and defensive rebounds to help them gain a 26-7 lead going into the half.
Even with an already lopsided lead going into the second half the Grizzlies were not going to let off the gas pedal. They continued to pressure the Spartans on defense and simply mangle them on offense.
The Grizzlies man defense gave the Spartans a great deal of trouble keeping them at an average of less than 4 points per quarter. This helped the Grizzlies pull away with an easy 55-17 victory over the Spartans.
“I’m really excited about our team this year because we don’t have to rely as much on one player. We are also a more rounded team,” said Clayton Congdon.
Both teams will meet again on Friday night at Strathmore High at 7 p.m. The Grizzlies will be looking for another win and have a chance to win the tournament.
