Cain drops out

Herman Cain, Republican candidate for the 2012 Republican Party Presidential nomination, ended his campaign December 3 due to allegations of sexual harassment and adultery.

"It's too bad he had to step down, but I understand why" said John Wilder, social science teacher at Granite Hills.

Cain grew up in Atlanta, Georgia and received a masters in computer science from Purdue in 1971. After finishing school, he ventured into restaurant business in 1980 where he successfully helped little known Burger Kings in the Philadelphia region become very profitable. He also temporarily served as Chairman of the Board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City Omaha Branch, later becoming member of the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City in 1992.

In the mid 1990s, Cain began dabbing into politics, having a say in President Bill Clinton's Health Care Plan of 1993 and becoming economic adviser to presidential candidate Bob Dole in 1996. Cain ran for the presidency in 2000 and for the Senate in 2004. He lost both times.

During the Tea Party movement in 2010, Cain spoke at many rallies. He became very popular through public exposure from those rallies and YouTube videos and after months of rumors, Cain officially announced his candidacy in May 2011. Cain won even more popularity among his crowds with his famous "9-9-9" tax policy plan. His plan called for a flat 9 percent tax on business, personal income, and sales tax.

"It seemed like it [the 9-9-9 tax plan] would work," said Jorge Arroyo, sophomore at Granite Hills.

In late October of 2011, four women claimed to have been sexually harassed by Cain in the late 1990's. Cain denied the allegations. In November, Cain told reporters that a woman by the name of Ginger White would claim she had an affair with him. Cain was right, as White was interviewed on the Fox News in Atlanta. White said the relationship lasted "13 years" and Cain would give her money for bills. Cain denied the allegations, but did acknowledge that he did help pay her bills without his wife knowing.

"Stuff like this comes out, and like it or not, it brings out a person's character. Sexual scandals seem to be closely tied to male politics," stated Jenna Holly, English teacher at Granite. "Gingrich has had several wives and a few affairs; you have [President Bill] Clinton and his scandal, [New York's 9th congressional district representative Anthony] Weiner with his photos, the list goes on and on."
