The newest Porterville Unified School District pathway at Granite Hills is the Academy of Law, Justice, and Education.

The LJE Academy is one out of nine pathways that PUSD offers. This is an academy to be completed throughout all 4 years of high school.

“I think our academy is excellent. In all of PUSD for incoming freshmen next year, our pathway had the second highest amount of students wanting to attend,” said Rich Lambie, teacher of a class of the LJE pathway. “Another great thing about our pathways is that the freshmen in this pathway have higher benchmark scores and G.P.A's, and part of that is because of our academic game plan.”

In his freshman class, Lambie tries to get students interested in different career fields related to Law and Justice. He helps them make up their minds so they can decide and pick the areas which they are most likely to be interested in.

“These classes have truly helped me on giving me ideas of the career I most possibly will pursue. I get to see all these different options,” said Carlos Chavez, a freshman student in the academy.

Every two to three weeks, Lambie tries to bring in a guest speaker. So far, he has had 15 speakers and expects to bring about nine more speakers in the future.

Lambie has brought in a very diverse selection of speakers. So far, he has brought in: the Highway Patrol, the Porterville Police Department, the Tulare County Probation Department, the Porterville Fire Department, the S.W.A.T. Team, and even a drug sniffing dog in between many others.

“It was very interesting. The students really liked the S.W.A.T. Team," said Lambie.

These different speakers talk about their careers, their positions, their salaries, and their different experiences. Most importantly, the guest speakers talk about the type of education it took to get in the position they are in.

“It is very encouraging. It’s exciting to see and hear all about these different people and their careers,” said Bella Martinez, freshman at Granite and student part of the academy.

Recently a few students were able to go on a trip to Pebble Beach. Several students are cadets, and this year they asked several students from the LJE pathway to assist.

"Every year the cadets have gone to Pebble Beach to help with traffic control and crowd control at the PGA golf match. The students I have talked to say that they are having so much fun but that it is a lot of work. This has given the students hands on experience," said Lambie.

PUSD is currently applying for University of California A-G elective credit for these law and justice classes.

“Another thing we are working on is that we want the students as seniors to be able to follow people in their careers and be able to see if they will like it or not. We have many projects coming up. The future of this program is very exciting," said Lambie.

:-) I’m glad that GHHS has a Law and Justice pathway. Most schools do not have many pathways or even no pathways at all. I’m going to be in the Law and Justice pathway next year. I believe it can help me get in to the Law enforcement.

I don't think kids really care but that doesn't mean we shouldn't. We live in a very ugly society and maybe if we cared a little more about this things we could change that.

I went to this trip! It was very informative and neat. The fact that we actually got to go inside of the fire trucks was a neat experience! If I could o on the trip a second time I would.
