February is teen dating violence awareness month and Granite Hills High School has taken its own ideas to spread awareness.
All Associated Student Bodies in the Porterville Unified School District were contacted by Porterville’s local family crisis center and each thought up their own ideas to show support for this cause.
“I am glad that we are now bringing attention to this issue that is normally overlooked,” said senior Elizabeth Dowling.
Since purple is the representing color for teen dating violence awareness month, Granite Hills’ Key Club took the initiative to tie purple ribbons around the majority of trees on campus.
“Tying ribbons around our campus’ trees is a very good idea and I think the students are becoming more aware of teen dating violence,” said senior Joshua Avalos.
Granite Hills’ ASB had a “Wear Purple” day on Friday, Feb. 9, 2012 in support of teen violence awareness month.
“I hope that the teen dating awareness month will let people know they are not alone and they can speak out about this serious issue,” said senior Ernestina Quintero.
ASB is now pondering different ideas to bring attention to the issue of teen dating violence.
“Hopefully we will have more dress up days of wearing purple since teen dating violence is so important and the entire month is to bring awareness to students,” said senior Kelsey Blackburn.
