Z Club is a community service club that is sponsored by Zonta International to help advance the status of women worldwide.
Z Club’s goal is to actively participate in local, nationwide, and international projects.
On Monday Feb. 13, 2012, Z Club members threw a Valentine’s Day party for those living in the local Women Shelter.
For those who live at the shelter, this is a nice time to relax and enjoy the season.
Several Granite Z Club members met at a local church at 4:30 p.m. to begin setting up and decorating for the party. Z Club officers have been planning this party for months and brainstorming ideas to make it successful.
“It always makes me happy seeing the children and their mothers enjoying themselves,” stated Z Club vice president Victor Espinoza. “It is sad that this is going to be my last party, however, being that I am a senior this year.”
The volunteers included: Basilio Arroyo, Wendy Camargo, Oscar Campos, Espinoza, Jose Gonzalez, Kathleen Jurkovich, Sonya Lopez, Isabel Perez, Bailey Ross, Mariela Tapia, and Hannah Vehrs.
“It was very rewarding seeing all the children have a great time and spending time with my friends,” said Gonzalez. “I like the fact that I know I am being a part of the children’s happiness.”
The church was decorated with pink and red. There were tables set up for candy necklace making, face painting, Valentine’s Day card making, and cupcake decorating. There was also a bean-bag tossing game station.
“I love helping out with the parties,” said Vehrs. “It is a great way to get involved in the community and is an awesome experience.”
Over 20 people from the shelter participated in the activity, which included “Simon Says” and “Red Light, Green Light.” As they left the party, each child received seasonal pencils, erasers, stickers, and candy. Zonta member and liaison, Denise Marchant and other members provided food and drinks for the celebration.
“The party was a great success. The women and their children have been in very stressful situations and knowing the children get to play, smile, and have fun is so heart-warming,” said Z Club advisor, Mrs. Ross.
