Seniors Isabel Pérez and Oscar Campos have been named Dell Scholar semi-finalists.
"I was surprised and excited that I received this recognition," stated Campos.
Being named a Dell Scholar semi-finalist gives both students a chance to receive a full ride scholarship to the college of their choosing.
"I felt happy to be considered as a semifinalist," stated Pérez.
In order to apply for the Dell Scholarship, students had to meet certain criteria such as having at least a 2.4 Grade Point Average, showing a need for assistance in paying for college, and being a United States citizen or permanent resident.
Students must have also been a part of a college readiness program such as Advancement Via Individual Determination to apply for this scholarship.
"Both Oscar and Isabel are very deserving and have worked hard for this recognition," stated Tiffany Ross, senior AVID teacher at Granite Hills. "I am extremely proud of both of them."
The general application for the Dell Scholarship closed on Sunday, Jan. 15. The Dell Scholar semi-finalists were announced on Wednesday, Feb. 1. via email.
Campos and Pérez have to send in their official transcripts, a copy of their Student Aid Report from their Free Application for Federal Student Aid, and a letter of recommendation to the Dell Scholars foundation before Saturday, March 10.
The Dell Scholars who will be receiving a full ride scholarship will be announced on Tuesday, April 10.
Becoming a Dell Scholar semi-finalist is no easy task; only a select few of the thousands of people who apply for this scholarship are given this title.
"I think what set us apart was that we were from the valley and we have a Hispanic background. We are also involved in a lot of extracurricular activities," stated Pérez.
Both Pérez and Campos are, in fact, involved with a variety of extracurricular activities on campus.
Pérez has been part of AVID since her freshman year.
“She works really hard and she is super nice,” stated senior AVID member Adilene Quintana.
As an athlete, Pérez is involved in cross country and track and field.
"We are both proud of Isabel," stated Isabel Pérez and Isaac Pérez, parents of Isabel. "This opportunity is another step towards accomplishing her goals as well as achieving The American Dream."
In school, Pérez is involved in Z club, California Scholarship Federation, Rotary Interact club, Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán and Spirit club.
Pérez is currently a vice president for Z club.
“I see her work really hard in her classes and I think it is a great opportunity for her,” stated senior Jody Georgianna.
Campos has also been a part of the AVID program at Granite Hills since his freshman year.
“I think that the Granite Hills AVID program has helped Oscar Campos find the initiative to apply and succeed as being a Dell Scholars semi-finalist,” stated senior AVID member Mario Madrigal.
As an athlete, Campos is an involved in cross-country, track and field, and wrestling.
"I am really thankful and hope that my son gets this scholarship," stated Maria Campos, mother of Oscar.
Campos is also a member of various clubs at Granite Hills High School including California Scholarship Federation, Z club, Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán, Rotary Interact club, Asian American club and Wilderness club.
“I am really happy that he made it as a semi-finalist because I think he deserves it; he is a really hard worker,” stated Quintana.
Campos is currently a CSF officer and is part of the Associated Student Body at Granite Hills.
Both Campos and Pérez encourage students to apply for this scholarship next year.
"It is important to not wait until the last minute to do the scholarship," stated Campos. "You have to vividly explain and show the evaluators who you really are and not fake your information."
