For the first time in 10 years, Granite Hills High School’s Academic Decathlon team did not win first place in the Tulare County competition.
Granite’s AcaDeca team received second place in this year’s competition, meaning that they will not be moving on to the state level.
“I think we tried really hard, but Harmony did better,” said John Petree, a team member for Granite.
The team competed on Friday, Feb. 3, and Saturday, Feb. 4 at Porterville College and Tulare County Office of Education. Granite competed with schools from around Tulare County, including: Monache High School, Porterville High School, Redwood High School, Tulare Western High School, Harmony Magnet Academy, Exeter High School, and El Diamante High School.
Granite was the overall winner in the Large Schools Division. Granite beat Monache, Porterville, Redwood, Tulare Western, and El Diamante.
The Academic Decathlon Awards Ceremony was held Monday, Feb. 6 in the Porterville College gymnasium.
Senior Melissa Walker received a trophy for the highest overall score in the scholastic division, and is waiting to find out if her score of 6,344.7 is the top score for all divisions in the county . Walker received a gold medal in music, essay, art, science (physics), interview, and language/literature. She took home two silver medals, one in speech and one in math.
Other team members from Granite also received medals as well.

Well, as an alumna of this school and as a former Decathlete, my hat goes off to you all on this year's team. It is hard taking the time to study, day in and day out, for months on end, on very challenging subjects, especially when very few people acknowledge the hard work you are doing or are blind to it. Congratulations to you guys for going out there and doing so well! You guys came away with medals, trophies, and an experience you will cherish and use the rest of your lives. That is nothing to regret in the least....(cont. in next comment)
