For the first time in 10 years, Granite Hills High School’s Academic Decathlon team did not win first place in the Tulare County competition.

Granite’s AcaDeca team received second place in this year’s competition, meaning that they will not be moving on to the state level.

“I think we tried really hard, but Harmony did better,” said John Petree, a team member for Granite.

The team competed on Friday, Feb. 3, and Saturday, Feb. 4 at Porterville College and Tulare County Office of Education. Granite competed with schools from around Tulare County, including: Monache High School, Porterville High School, Redwood High School, Tulare Western High School, Harmony Magnet Academy, Exeter High School, and El Diamante High School.

Granite was the overall winner in the Large Schools Division. Granite beat Monache, Porterville, Redwood, Tulare Western, and El Diamante.

The Academic Decathlon Awards Ceremony was held Monday, Feb. 6 in the Porterville College gymnasium.

Senior Melissa Walker received a trophy for the highest overall score in the scholastic division, and is waiting to find out if her score of 6,344.7 is the top score for all divisions in the county . Walker received a gold medal in music, essay, art, science (physics), interview, and language/literature. She took home two silver medals, one in speech and one in math.

Other team members from Granite also received medals as well.

The seniors who earned medals include: Ernestina Quintero, who received a gold medal in interview; Brian Staight, who earned a gold medal in essay and two silver medals in art and science (physics); and Jairo Madrigal, who received a bronze medal in math.

The juniors who earned medals include: Petree, who received a bronze medal in music; and Stephanie Torres, who recieved two bronze medals in the Superquiz and science.

The sophomores who earned medals include: Stephanie Hicks, who received a gold medal in music and a bronze in speech; Roberta Simpson, who received a silver medal in music and art and a bronze in essay; Jane Olshefsky, who received a silver medal in language/literature and a bronze in music.

“It is going to be hard to do well next year without people like Melissa, who always does well for us,” said Petree.

Though you did place second place, it does not mean that you guys did not do good. And if you continue to do your best you may end up with the win next year.

I think that if you guys would have tried a little harder you would have gotten first place. I'm sure that next year you'll will first place for sure.

...That is the greatest thing about Academic Decathlon. It isn't the medals that you win or the trophies you gain, those will quickly be forgotten and disappear (believe me, I know). Rather, it is the friends you make, the things you learn, and a journey that you can cherish forever. You guys will forget the medals you won and the points you garnered, but you will never forget the amazing and fun experiences you were able to have together as a team. Remember, the journey is more important than the destination. And you guys have just had one wonderful journey.

...For those of you on this team this year, remember to cherish the journey you've had - and instead of dwelling on what you didn't do, think of what you did do. You had the chance to spend time with your fellow students, who by this point are like family. You had the chance to study crazy, interesting subjects and learn things you wouldn't have known otherwise. And, guess what? Even when the competition is over, you can keep on doing just that. You will be eager to spend time with others and accomplish amazing things with them. You will want to learn about new things and master them. And, you will want to keep doing it in every season of your life...(cont. in next comment)

Hi Granite Hills!

Well, as an alumna of this school and as a former Decathlete, my hat goes off to you all on this year's team. It is hard taking the time to study, day in and day out, for months on end, on very challenging subjects, especially when very few people acknowledge the hard work you are doing or are blind to it. Congratulations to you guys for going out there and doing so well! You guys came away with medals, trophies, and an experience you will cherish and use the rest of your lives. That is nothing to regret in the least....(cont. in next comment)

I for one, think "try a little harder" is easy to say, if you are not in ACADECA and do not spend countless hours studying. It is pretty naive to make an oblivious, erronous statement without any validation.Plus, many of the ACADECA members joined late. How is it that Granite is not satisfied with winning overall in large schools. We BEAT Monache, Porterville and many other schools.
