As WinterGuard season approaches, it is crunch time for the Grizzly auxiliary to get flag routines, costumes, and props together.

This is the first year ever that Granite Hills has had a WinterGuard team but that has not scared the Grizzly’s from competing.

“I’m happy that I get to participate and that I have a solo. Competing makes auxiliary way more intense and I’m really excited to see how it goes,” said Madison Rice, a junior majorette in the Granite Hills marching band, and Alice, in the show.

The show is called “Alice”, which is a song by Avril Lavigne from the new “Alice in Wonderland” movie, but the show is based on the original version of Alice in Wonderland. Characters in the show consist of the Alice played by Madison Rice, Mad Hatter played by Madison Stubbs, the White Rabbit played by Toni Lopez, the Cheshire Cat played by Sierra Lopez, the Queen of Hearts played by Megan Avalos and her cards played by Jasmine Velasquez, Juana Saldana, Celina Cervantez, Natalie Hernandez, Jennifer Arreguin, Yesenia Lopez, Rosana Alcantar, and Katrina Carrillo.

Granites Hills’ WinterLine is composed of a battery which is a drum line, and a pit, which includes auxiliary percussion such as vibes, marimbas, and xylophones. Abraham Leon is battery captain for the 2012 season and Rosendo Vallejo is pit captain.

“This year we’re participating in the Bakersfield circuit (Pep and Pageantry Arts association of Central California) and I’m a little nervous because the best schools in Southern California go to this competition. It makes it even more competitive because there’s only three schools in our division, which means getting third is still last place,” said Rosendo Vallejo, pit captain.

The WinterLine will be competing against West High School and Arvin High School.

The competition will be held at North High School in Bakersfield, California on February 4, this Saturday. Our Grizzly WinterLine will be performing their show “Coulrophobia,” fear of clowns at 11:24 and our Grizzly winterguard will be performing at 2:54. Awards will be held at 1:45 for winterline and 7:00 for winterguard. The entry fee is $6 for adults and $4 for children. 5 year old children and under get in free.

Update: Granite Hills WinterLine wins at North High School on Saturday, Feb. 4. Read Monday's Grizzly Gazette for expanded update and full results. Watch: Video will be posted on Grizzly Gazette video channel and YouTube page on Tuesday, Feb. 7.

That sounded like a lot of fun. I wish I knew about it sooner. I would have gone to it because I love the movie Alice in Wonderland, and to see it done by the students that come here, would be amazing to be a part of.

It was very fun and exciting experience for my first time. Even though we got a first place doesn't mean it won't be hard the next time we try! SO that's why we need to try a lot harder and do our best.

I agree with one of my fellow drummer and senior Danny Jacuinde It nerve racking but we did our best to make a name for granite in our performance.

I think that color guard is completely ready for competing. It's great to see that they are finally able to compete. They defiantly work hard and deserve it. Good luck Winter Guard. You guys will do great. ;-)
