With excitement and the theme of Captain America, Granite Hills recognized students with a 3.0 and above. Held on Thursday, Nov 17, the assembly differed from previous years by having every student at Granite Hills High School attending.

In a packed gym, it was easy to spot the white Captain America tee shirts that all 236 students with 3.0 GPAs and above sported.

Each GPA group had a different name, separated between sophomores, juniors and seniors. Students with a 3.0 GPA through 3.49 GPA received cardinal honors. Students with a 3.50 GPA through 3.99 GPA received silver honors. Students with a 4.0 GPA and above received the highest honor, the principal’s honors.

One of the main objectives of guidance and administration was to welcome parents and to get them involved as much as possible, so all guardians were invited to the assembly to support their children. Another objective of the guidance and administration was to recognize students and promote academic heroes, which is why the theme of Captain America was chosen.

“[The assembly] was awesome. We were concerned about behavior, but they were the best behaved group of students,” said counselor Arlina Gillett, head of the assembly.

After the assembly, students with 3.0 GPAs and above migrated, with their parents, into the mini-gym where refreshments were served, including blueberry and lemon scones. Following this, the academic scholars were excused from all classes to attend a showing of Captain America at Galaxy Theaters.

The funding for this assembly came from the account to award students with high GPAs, while additional funding came from the account for parent involvement.

Granite’s Associated Student Body members Stephanie Bedolla and Kathleen Jurkovich were in charge of decorating the gym with the theme of Captain America.

“I think that ASB did an incredible job with the Captain America theme, it turned out better than we had expected,” said senior Stephanie Bedolla.

Granite will have another assembly this year to have students be recognized immediately after each semester; the next assembly will be for the fall semester 2011 in the spring of 2012.

it was very an interesting assembly, but in stead of having the freshmen there they could have been in class working and catching up on anything that they need to. It was a good thing though that the juniors sophomores and seniors got awards maybe next semester we will to.

The assembly was very interesting to attend but it was a little pointless to have the freshmen attend since they did not get anything. Instead of being at the assembly they could have been in class catching up on work from their classes or doing something productive. Although it was very interesting to see all the sophomores, juniors and seniors get awards they should have had something for the freshmen.
