For the past couple of weeks Granite Hills agricultural science teacher and FFA adviser Danell Daniel and her student Josh Woodward have been busy building sand boxes for the agriculture department at Granite Hills High School.
Being organized is something agriculture advisor Daniel always tries to do, whether it is in the class room, or around the green house.
“It is cool how there are projects going on that will make Granite that much more unique. I can’t wait to see them when they are finished,” stated senior Victor Espinoza.
The construction of sand boxes for keeping all the different sand and soil separated is a work in progress. By using a drill press, wood, metal and a few other tools, student and teacher have been busy with the creation of these sand separators.
Woodward, a senior at Granite, has been a main factor for creating this idea. He takes his time out of his day to work on this project as much as possible.
“I try to come out here as much as I can,” Woodward said. “Even on weekends when I don’t have to work, I’ll come and try to finish the little things.”
Students that like building and creating new things for the Ag department are always welcome to talk to Daniel and possibly creating it for the campus.
“I enjoy doing what I do,” Woodward said. “It is fun and something I hope to pursue as a career in the future.”
Also, other students do what they can to help Woodward and Daniel in constructing the sand boxes.
“Sometimes we get a few students to help us. Toni Lopez helps me a lot during seventh period since she is the Ag foreman. Together, we put six metal bars in a matter of time. We drilled holes in the metals, leveled them, screwed them on and everything,” Woodward said.
Daniel has been helping Woodward along the way. They both work on the project as much as they can on their spare time.
“Mrs. Daniel had a plan,” Woodward said, “now we’re bringing it to life.”
Woodward is always doing something in the Ag department trying to beautify the campus. Daniel is very excited and can’t wait till the project is completed.
“I think the sand boxes are going to be worth the effort that the kids are putting into it,” said junior Madison Rice. “I know that they are working their hardest to finish it by Christmas, but the kids that are working on it are trying to make the sand box as beautiful as possible.”
