On Friday, October 21, Granite Hills FFA Chapter Officers went to Zalad Park to participate in the Butterfield Stage Day.
The officers arrived at the park at approximately 9:30a.m. They set up their roping station next to the baseball field.
The officers’ job was to talk to the fourth grade students about how roping began. After they gave the students some brief background information, the officers taught them how to rope.
“It was really fun!” Said FFA member, Madison Rice, “My favorite part was teaching the little kids how to rope. They never had roped before and I loved seeing their facial expression when they ‘roped the bull’.”
Every year, different schools come and talk to elementary school students about different historical remedies and events that took place.
Granite FFA members dressed up as cowboys and cowgirls to get into the roping spirit.
“It’s always fun to get dressed up,” said Agriculture Advisor, Dannel Daniel. “When we get dressed up, it gets the kids excited and wanting to learn more about what we have to say.”
Granite taught the students how to rope until lunch time.
“See all the fourth graders’ smiles where the best! They really enjoyed learning how to rope and I loved helping them learn something new,” said FFA member, Daisy Cupis.
The students ate and got a chance to look at the other stands. Strathmore FFA was set up next to Granite’s stand and was informing people how the “horse power” began. They had a display of how much one horse had to pull when mining back in the old days. All of the students had a change to try and pull the same amount of weight one horse would pull day after day.
“My favorite part was getting to see all the other booths and learning how different things began,” said FFA member, Isabel Ruiz.
Granite’s FFA plans to join the event again and have another successful year.
