This year at the Tulare County Fair was a great success for Granite Hills.

“It was a great fair! We did really well,” agriculture advisor Danell Daniel said. “This has probably been the best fair we’ve had in nine years.”

Granite Hills has three young men who showed lambs at the Tulare County Fair: Joshua Woodward, Dalton Mills and William Miller. They each did great with their projects.

Woodward is a senior at Granite Hills. He has been showing lambs for three years in high school and had enjoyed participating in the fairs over the years. Though he did not place in showmanship, he placed third in market. With that title, he went on to sell his lamb for $5 a pound. Over all he had a great turn out at the fair and made a really great profit with his animals.

Mills is a junior at Granite Hills, this was his first time showing an animal at the Tulare County Fair, for showing his lamb for the first time, Mills did very well in his different events. He placed third in market and received $5 a pound. “I really liked this fair; it’s different from the Porterville Fair. I like Tulare County Fair and definitely plan on showing again next year,” Mills said.

Miller is also a junior at Granite Hills; this was his first time as well showing a lamb at the Tulare County Fair. In Showmanship, Miller placed 18th and third in market. He enjoyed his time at the Tulare County Fair and is still debating whether or not he would like to show an animal there again.

Freshman Jed Hackett entered a lamb into the Tulare County Fair, but with Springville 4-H and not Granite Hills FFA. This was his first time showing at the Tulare County Fair. Though he made a great profit with his lamb, he does not plan on showing again at this event. Hackett did not place in showmanship but he received first place in market in his class. When auctioning, Hackett sold his animals for $4.50 a pound.

“On the downside, the lights and power went off right before lunch and the barns got extremely hot,” stated Hackett. Granite Hills’ floral design class entered two banners in the fair as well. One banner received first place and the other took second. Everyone was proud of their accomplishment and thought their hard work paid off. The floral design class hopes to enter more banners next year.

“The kids made good money on their projects; they did very well in their showmanship classes and they placed high in their [market] classes too. They did great over all,” Daniel said with a smile on her face.
