Every year there are two major fairs, the Porterville Fair and Tulare County Fair. This week just happens to be Tulare County Fair week.
“This year I couldn’t have an Agriculture related science class, so I had to stick with 4-H,” said freshman at Granite Jed Hackett. “4-H is fun because it teaches you new skills, how to be a good person and it gives you a good work ethic.”
From Sept. 12-16, kids throughout Tulare County have the opportunity to show animals, enter indoor exhibits or even show a plant.
“A lot of work is put into raising a lamb, because you have to make sure you are feeding it the right amount and then you have to train it to stack,” said Hackett.
Granite Hills FFA will be participating in the Tulare County Fair this year, and the students participating have high expectation for their entries.
This year Granite has three students showing lambs; Joshua Woodward, Dalton Mills and William Miller.
These three boys having been working with their lambs before and after school over the past few weeks, preparing for the Fair.
“I think it’s going to be a tough competition for them; they’re going up against tough competitors, but they have been working diligently so I know they will do the best they possibly can,” said FFA member Madison Rice.
Rice is not entering an animal this year due to her busy schedule. She hopes to participate next year.
Also, Granite’s floral design class is entering two banners with this year’s theme “Just Plane Fun.” They have been working none stop over the past week in sixth and seventh period. They were both very creative and each have their own personalities. This year, Granite hopes to beat its cross town rivals Porterville High School and Moncahe High School.
