Toys for Tots
NewsBy Kaylee Murillo
This holiday season, Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (MECHA) is giving back to the kids in the community by participating in the Toys for Tots program.
MECHA club members are helping deliver, pack, and purchase toys for the kids in the community who are less fortunate. Toys will be distributed to different towns ranging from Lindsay, Springville, Poplar, Ducor, Terra Bella, Strathmore, and Porterville.
“We’re not just all about Granite,” said MECHA advisor Raul Bermudez. “We are a community based service club and we like to give back anyway we can.”
MECHA has been participating in Toys for Tots for about 10 years and has found great success and pride in sponsoring this program.
MECHA usually sees around 200 hundred toys collected during the season. Most toys given to Toys for Tots are bought through MECHA fundraisers.
“I like the fact that we do Toys for Tots because I like to see the happiness it brings [kids] when they receive their [gifts],” said freshman Martha Robles.
MECHA members get to see Christmas in the making; when kids get a present through Toys for Tots, it may possibly be the only toy they receive for Christmas.
“I like how not only kids from Porterville benefit, but kids in other towns do as well,” said sophomore Daniella Medina.
Students who would like to help MECHA bring joy to a child this Christmas season can donate a new and unwrapped or gently used toy in the Toys for Tots bin, which is located inside the guidance office.
