Toddlers and Tiaras: Commentary

By Danielle RafananSpray tans, fake eyelashes, flippers and fake hair; what more could any little girl want?
Many parents all over the country think this is the ideal life for their daughters. Toddlers and Tiaras follows young beauty pageant contestants on their hunt for that big, sparkly crown, lots of cash and huge titles.
Think of going above and beyond for a beauty pageant and then multiply that by twenty. The moms on this show are taking the little four and five year old daughters to get spray tans, eyebrows waxed, and putting them in little costume that would not be acceptable outside of the pageant room. These little girls are also getting acrylic nails, fake teeth (flippers), false eyelashes, thousand dollar gowns and multiple coaches for each event in the pageant.
“This show just emphasizes the whole obsession over beauty,” says junior Brooke Quiling.
Over the last five seasons there have been over 45 pageants that Toddlers and Tiaras has followed, ranging about three to five girls every episode. The last episode that I watched there was a 16 month old little girl that was preparing to compete in a pageant. The mom commented that the reason why she wanted to have a little girl so badly was to put her in pageants, and someday be Miss America. This mom was living so vicariously through her daughter that by the time her daughter turned five, she would be so superficial that she would be deprived of her own childhood.
“The mom’s are just living through their daughters,” comments senior Taylor Means. “They are teaching their daughters to be fake when they grow up.”
This mom had her daughter’s eyebrows waxed at one and a half years old and also had her spray tanned. Of course the baby was scared to get her eyebrows waxed because the mom stated that for a previous pageant the lady who waxed her daughter eyebrows ripped off her skin.
Wouldn’t you think that the skin of a one and a half year old is not developed enough to handle hot wax? Honestly, I have no idea what goes through these parents’ minds. They think their daughters want the pageant life, but in all reality it is them wanting their daughters in it. Obviously a one and a half year old is not able to make that decision considering she can not even talk.
“I think this is all very degrading, they should be outside playing and enjoying their childhood years,” says junior Ernestina Quintero.
