Victoria Paz, a freshmen at Granite Hills High School, practices different activities outside of school. Paz is a member of her family’s mariachi.

Paz was raised in a musical environment. Most of her family has been a part of the mariachi from her grandfather, uncles, cousins, and even her younger sisters.

Victoria became a part of mariachi when she was very young; being a part of mariachi has been her passion ever since. “I was six years old when my grandpa got me involved with the mariachi academy of Porterville,” said Paz. “From that day I have been a part of a mariachi group.”

Paz is currently a part of the mariachi academy of Porterville and the mariachi group “Fiesta de Valle.” She is one of the vocalists for both groups.

“Victoria has an amazing voice,” shares Luis Felix, also a freshman at Granite. “She must have had to practice a lot and be very dedicated to perfect her voice like that.”

She plays various instruments like the guitar and the viola.

“I like to sing more than play instruments,” admits Paz.

Apart from being part of the mariachi groups, Victoria is also a volleyball player at Granite. Sometimes it’s difficult to manage time for everything but it is important for her to prioritize.

“It’s difficult to arrange time, but we assign the practices during the weekend so they can be easier for me to attend,” says Paz.

Paz says the best part of being in the mariachi is the feeling of happiness and satisfaction she gets after doing a good job and hearing the audience applause.

“We all enjoy the moment like the family we are,” said Paz. “It’s also fun at the same time.”

Not everyone is a fan of mariachi music.

“The music of mariachi is appreciated mainly from the people that love and enjoy the Mexican culture,” stated Paz. “Especially the people that understand Spanish like it more.”

For Paz it’s a pride and joy to be a part of the mariachi group. It is an activity that has been in her family from generation to generation.

Victoria gets all of the support and economic help from her parents. Her parents leave it as her choice whether or not she wants to be a part of the mariachi. They will always support her decisions.

The monthly cost is $20 to participate in the mariachi academy of Porterville.

“The cost of the mariachi suit is an average of $300, and there is no need to buy a new one every year unless their old one doesn’t fit anymore,” shares Monica Paz, Victoria’s mother.

It is a great deal in which youth like Paz would want to participate in activities that form things that are a part of their roots. Not only is it a pride for her, but also for her whole family.

“I am very prideful in Victoria. She makes me happy that she is a part of something she likes, especially something that the whole family is involved in,” admits Victoria’s mother.
