Good luck continues for the Granite Hills’ Winterline, who took first place for the second time in a row at the Pep and Pageantry Arts Association of Central California competition.
“I think we did great,” said band director Kenny Ormande, “What we did Saturday was an improvement over our first performance. Both the Winterline and the Winterguard put in some extra practice time and really worked hard. The Winterline added almost a whole minute of more music and our Winterguard almost changed up their whole routine.”
The competition was held at Centennial High School in Bakersfield, Calif, on Saturday, Feb. 18. Both Granite Hills’ Winterline and Winterguard competed in this event.
"We worked really hard for the past two weeks," stated junior Danny Jacuinde. "All our hard work really paid off and I am happy with the results."
The judges for this event were Mark Hammons for performance analysis, Vince Oliver for general effect, and Richard Delgado for visual. Granite Hills’ Winterline received a 25.75 in performance analysis, a 27.80 in general effect, and a 13.80 in visual. Their total score was a 67.35 with no penalties.
Granite Hills beat out the 4 other teams in their division. The other schools included Shafter High School, West High School, Arvin High School, and Rosamond High School. Granite Hills beat the second place team, Shafter, by exactly one point.
"I think that we did very good at the competition," said freshman Jed Hackett. "We all had a good time and made lots of fun memories."
Granite Hills’ Winterguard placed fourth out of 6 teams. Their competitors were Stockdale High School, Wasco High School, Shafter High School, Highland High School, and Independence High School.
“They moved up three spots from the first competition so the Winterguard did awesome. I think the Winterguard has a chance to get up to at least a first place spot before the seasons over with the rate they're going,” said Ormande.
The judges for this event were Michael Levesque for equipment, Heather Kuyper for movement, Suzanne Zamora for ensemble, and John Zamora and Tony Crapo for general effect. Granite Hills received a 10.1 in equipment, a 10.1 in movement, an 8.0 in ensemble, and a 9.8 and a 9.3 in general effect. Their total score was a 47.3, which closely followed Shafter High School, who received a 47.6.
"I feel like we did a lot better than the first competition," stated sophomore Sierra Lopez. "But we still have a lot of work ahead of us.”
The next competition will be held on March 3, at Foothill High School in Bakersfield, Calif.
