Singing is an art

Singing is the art of creating musical sounds with the voice by augmenting systematic speech by the use of emphasis and rhythm.
From the very beginning, choral students are taught the proper technique of breath support, posture, and sound initiated from the larynx. The art requires highly developed muscle reflexes focusing on coordination rather than muscle strength.
Sometimes it doesn’t take natural talent to sing, but rather practice and listening," stated Mai Lor, a former choir student.
Granite Hills’ choir students start their class every day with warm ups linked with various vocal exercises. The routine includes diaphragm and pitch training, which eventually leads up to the acapella major scale.
"You can turn music into life, like dancing, but instead through your voice. Singing is something you have to love and really enjoy. Only then will you be able to express what’s within you," said Isabel Ruiz.
Every voice is unique from any other as choral music is split between: bass, tenor, alto and soprano. Basses are males with deep voices that provide the structure of the sound. Males with lighter voices usually hold the melody as tenors. Girls are put into either the alto or soprano group with sopranos being the highest and altos the lowest.
"I remember having to get over my shyness of singing in front of people" said Lupe Ramirez a student at Fresno State University, who is now majoring in performing arts.
Singing takes skill and passion to achieve, even in the best of voices. The Granite’s choir students put commitment and time into improving their singing, just as athletes devote commitment and time to their respective sports.
