The annual Las Posadas event hosted by Granite Hills High School celebrated the community, the Mexican heritage, and the coming of the holidays on Thursday, Dec. 8.
Extensive planning on behalf of the planning committee, help from MECHA, Link, Wilderness Club, and the help of each volunteer contributed to the success of this year’s Las Posadas celebration.
Food and entertainment was free and the whole community was invited to attend.
The celebration included food, mariachi music, musical presentations by elementary and high school students, piñatas and candy for children.
The meal included carne asada, rice, beans, salsa and a bread-roll.
After the meal, 700 people with lit candles marched across the campus of Granite Hills; the march stimulated the journey of Mary and Joseph in search of shelter during the pregnancy of Mary. Crowds marched to and from Granite Hills classrooms, where volunteer students sang.
“It was fun. It was neat. I’ve never seen anything like the [Las] Posadas until I came to Granite Hills,” admitted freshman mariachi singer Victoria Paz. “In Springville, they never recognized it, but here, they actually appreciate the Mexican culture.”
Granite volunteers served over 1,000 parents, students, and children. For some, the experience was eye-opening.
“It was a good experience being able to participate in the tradition of celebrating a part of my culture,” admitted Ismael Ruiz.
The children who attended Las Posadas had the chance to break five piñatas, which were created by Granite Hill’s 3D Design classes.
Over 500 bags full of fruit and candies were distributed the children.
Counselor at Granite Hills, Maria Molina sang “Feliz Navidad.”
“She sang very beautifully,” said junior at Granite Hills, Maria Corona. “I didn’t know she had such a great voice.”
The celebration was set to conclude at 8 p.m., but parents and many others stayed after the set time and listened to mariachi music.
