Mother’s day is an occasion that is celebrated all around the world. In Mexico there is a variety of traditions, some may be similar to the ones here in the U.S.
Here in the U.S., one of the traditions for moms is to go out for dinner, or simply buy them gifts and just have a good time. In Mexico, younger kids do arts and crafts in school that usually include poems, or letters, and teachers help set up performances that include dances, and usually they have raffles, this is all so the moms have a good time.
Here in the U.S., we do arts and crafts usually in elementary, but not all teachers do this. A common gift may be flowers or chocolates.
In Mexico, Mother’s Day is always on the tenth of May and here in the U.S it is always the second Sunday of May.
This celebration in Mexico is seen as a celebration for moms, but it also has a religious meaning for many Mexican Catholics, part of Mothers Day is to sing “las mananitas” to the Virgin Mary.
“On Mother’s Day my siblings and I prepare food, like tamales for my mom; she really enjoys this,” said Adilene Quintana, a Granite Hills junior.
Many Hispanics believe that Mother’s day in America is too materialistic.
According to Andrea Navarrete, a senior at Granite Hills, “Mother’s Day in Mexico is seen more like a religious day unlike in the U.S., where it is more commercial.”
