All of the hard work and dedication that all members of the Granite Hills High School percussion ensemble put into the new program has paid off.
On Saturday, March 26, the percussion ensemble performed in the San Joaquin Valley Color Guard and Percussion Review (SJVCGPR) championship competition at Clovis North High School. They received fourth place out of a total of six schools in Regional class A.
"Our drum line did very well for it being their first year. Their performance is something they can be proud of. It is something the whole school can be proud of," said drum line instructor Cody Clem.
Granite received a score of 72.00, with a penalty of 0.10, leaving the overall score of a 71.90. They received a 28.40 in general effect, which was judged by Sean McNeal, a 27.60 in performance analysis, judged by Scott Johnson, and a 16.00 in visual, judged by Dennis Aquilina.
First place was Edison High School, which received an 83.65. Mission Oak High School received second place with an 83.45, followed by Selma High School with a 77.60. Fifth place was Hoover High School with a 68.85, and last was Orosi High School with a 66.10.
"I feel like they performed at their best, and that's all I can ask for. They did an amazing job this year," said band director Sasanna Efseaff.
They played this year’s show which was entitled "Requiem." The show included four songs, "Requiem for a dream," "Mortal Kombat," "Borderline," and "Rosendo's song." During the show, a boy is having a nightmare about his video games. In the beginning, his mom tells him to stop playing games and to start playing the drums. During his dream, his mom chases him and ninjas from his game come to life and play the drums. At the end of the show, he wakes up holding a pair of drum sticks ready to start playing the drums again.
"I like the fact that we learn one show and perfect it. Going to the competitions help us get ready for championships, so we know what the judges are looking for and know what we need to fix for next time. Our show this year was really good and I feel like we performed at our best," said senior captain Luis Felix.
Granite will be continuing the drum line program next year with a new show, and hopefully some trophies to go with it.
