By Kelsey BlackburnGood luck continues to roll for the Granite Hills High School percussion ensemble.
On Friday, Feb. 11, the percussion ensemble traveled to Clovis West High School to compete in the second San Joaquin Valley Color Guard and Percussion Review (SJVCGPR).
This is only the second time Granite Hills has ever competed in SJVCGPR, and they took home the second place trophy in their division. Not only did they place better than their first competition, but they raised their overall score.
“It felt good taking home a trophy. We have been working really hard, but there is always room for improvement. Hopefully next time we will get first!” said senior pit member, Mai Lor.
Granite Hills received a total score of 59.55, only 4.05 points away from the first place team and beating the third place team by 3.65 points. They received a total of 123 points in performance analysis, 120 points in general effect, and 111 points in visual performance. Last time they only received a total of 54.25 points, and received 103 in performance analysis, 111 in general effect and 115 in visual performance. Clearly, they have improved a considerable amount.
“I’m extremely pleased and proud of their hard work. They deserve every one of those points,” said Granite Hills band director, Sassana Efseaff.
There were three schools in the Regional A class this week, Selma High School (first), Granite Hills, and Hoover High School (third).
The percussion ensemble has been practicing really hard and adding new things into their show in the past two weeks. They learned new visuals and learned how to play the songs with a lot more feeling.
“It’s easy to see that the drum line is working hard and want that first place trophy. They keep ‘beasting’ it up at competitions and keep getting better,” said junior Sheng Lor.
